Pulp Fiction Thursday: Son of Frankenstein

I love the Frankenstein movies made by Universal during the 1930’s. Oddly enough, Son of Frankenstein was the first one I ever saw, and it remains my favorite of the Karloff as the monster flicks. What’s not to like? It features three of the greatest big screen villains of all-time in Rathbone, Karloff, and Lugosi as well as Lionel Atwill’s cop character with the crazy wooden arm. It’s obvious that Mel Brooks loves it too: many of the funniest characters and bits in Young Frankenstein are drawn from the Son. Here’s the lobby card for your amusement. Time for me … Continue reading Pulp Fiction Thursday: Son of Frankenstein

And Now A Word From The Ivory Tower

Oh see, now I never would have thoughtthis was our exact problem, but David Brooks schools me otherwise: Maybe before we can build great monuments to leaders we have to relearn the art of following. Democratic followership is also built on a series of paradoxes: that we are all created equal but that we also elevate those who are extraordinary; that we choose our leaders but also have to defer to them and trust their discretion; that we’re proud individuals but only really thrive as a group, organized and led by just authority. I don’t know if America has a … Continue reading And Now A Word From The Ivory Tower

Instead of engaging these dopes, I think I’m just going to have this. ALL OF THIS. Well, I’m back for one more pre-election go with Adventures In Social Media. Please kill me now. Anyway, today I bring up an acquaintance from high school, who gives us the following: I just stopped at this point. Folks, that guy is under the impression that he was right. If there are any of you out there who think that this world can actually see a riot that “upholds violence,” please–take a few minutes to say goodbye to your family and friends, then swallow … Continue reading Further Adventures In Social Media; or, We Just Can’t Be Educated

Lou Grant visits the Picayune Newsroom

Not really but some unnamed wag (wags?) on the Picayune staff has posted flyers featuring commentary from the crusty but lovable fictional newsman: Other captions include: “How exactly do we do more with less?” and my personal favorite: “A 3-day-a-week newspaper in New Orleans? When did Ted Baxter become an executive at Advance Publications?” Btw, if you’re interested in following the slow motion suicide of a 175 year old newspaper, Gambit editor Kevin Allman is all over this story like a cheap suit. I’ve never been sure what that metaphor means but I’ve always liked it or is it a … Continue reading Lou Grant visits the Picayune Newsroom

‘Generous’ With Pensions

Clarence Page, everybody, being oh-so-reasonable and Very Serious: But the Walker race is a dramatic example of a trend that doesn’t need super-PAC money. Public workers cannot rely on voters to be generous about their pensions and other benefits when so many of the voters’ own wages and benefits are suffering. I am just going to get a fucking T-shirt that reads ASK ME WHAT DEFERRED COMPENSATION MEANS, so that I can start posting pictures of myself wearing it whenever somebody writes one of these stupid columns about overpaid teachers and firefighters who expect handouts from “the taxpayers” or in … Continue reading ‘Generous’ With Pensions

Election Day Update

Okay, everyone get out and vote. The main reason I hate the electoral vote is that it makes voting for President somewhat less meaningful for us non-swing staters. I even remember when Louisiana was a swing state in 1992 and 1996 because of Perot’s presence on the ballot. Clinton won the Gret Stet twice, and I saw the man himself onstage in NOLA several times, including once with Hillary, Al and Tipper. End of that brief stroll down memory lane. In the immortal words of Poppy Bush, Obama has the “Big Mo,” even Mark Halperin is conceding that he probably … Continue reading Election Day Update

Point, Counterpoint

There’s a lot of cool stuff floating around the interwebs today: both pro and anti-Obama. We’ll start with a ridiculous, over the top attack flyer sent out by Alabama Gopersin the race for the State Supreme Court: I wonder if former Godfather’s Pizza CEO and teabagger Herman Cain is going to object to this? He’s the fucking Godfather, after all. This flyer does, however, give me an excuse to do my Brando as Vito Corleone impression. I hope Bonasera is available to bury the already embalmed Romney campaign. Whoever did the embalming did a bad job: neither Willard nor Ann … Continue reading Point, Counterpoint

Nucky gets the bum’s rush at the club, so he thinks Mellon is done with him but the mogul wanted to finish their business on the phone. Ron Paul supporters arrested as La GOP Shreveport convention splits in two
examiner.com ^ | June 2, 2012 | James Plummer

Posted on Tuesday, June 05, 2012 3:17:51 AM byCasie

Chaos erupted in Shreveport today as police officers arrested state GOP delegates who support Ron Paul for the party’s 2012 presidential nomination.

The dispute arose after the state party’s central committee issued “supplemental rules” earlier this week concerning the delegate selection process. A press release from the Ron Paul campaign this afternoon referred to the 11th hour changes as “illegal rules.”

After fights in the Rules Committee Friday, state party chairman opened the convention moving to pass the new rules, when the majority of delegates moved to elect a new convention chair. When Villere refused to yield the dais, the majority elected a new chair and turned their chairs. As this was happening, the Villere faction convinced the Shreveport Police Department to arrest some of the Paul delegates holding microphones for “trespassing.”

During the forcible arrests, Shreveport police dislocated the hip of the gentlemen in the video here, identified by the Paul campaign as State Central Commiteeman Henry Herford Jr. of Franklin Parish.

Louisiana politics!

Henry Herford Jr. was elected by an overwhelming majority as new convention chair. Mr. Villere, who had appointed himself the convention chairman, refused to yield. When delegates began turning their chairs around, Mr. Herford rose to call the convention to order. Mr. Villere then convinces police to forceably remove Mr. Herford, who is injured and sent to the hospital! Video at source.(My first post. Member since 2004!)

Even for a Freeper, that’s a pretty impressive feat of mental gymnastics.

You can’t seize power you legitimately won.

The Ron Paul camp won their delegates fair and square. The LA GOP needs to ask itself why. Not ignore the results because the current leadership wants a different result.Throwing out legit results is not conservative.

1. Rules Chairman loses election
2. The next day, the State Party Chairman proclaims that old Rules Chairman back in to his position
3. The new Rules Chairman(elected by Paul supporters) objects, State Chairman orders him removed from the floor by police
4. Paul supporters make motion to elect new Party Chairman, succeed in voting in their guy
5. Old State Chairman refuses to leave position
6. Paul supporters turn around seats, begin their own convention
7. Old State Chairman orders police to remove Paul supporters and their elected Chairman

I really don’t see how Paul supporters were “disrupting” the convention, unless showing up and voting in person(where the ballots can’t be fixed) is disruptive.

This isn’t going to work out well for anyone.

But you have to agree that Villere and friends can’t simply ignore elected chairmen they do not like and then use excessive police force to enforce their will.

It makes Romney supporters look like strong-arm elite Rhino thugs and further fractures the party. It makes Paul’s people look like champions of conservatism fighting the old Republican establishement.

I want to also mention that after the chaos of the convention, one the Ron Paul people (I can’t remember her name) called the Moon Griffon radio show to saythey came to the convention in the spirit of reconciliation and the intention of conceding some seats to Romney supporters.

7 day tracking: O – 50/R-44

3 day tracking: O – 51% approve/43% – disapprove

I don’t know what to make of this. Up until about 4 days ago, Gallup
had the race tied. There was a sudden shift to Obama on either Sat or
Sun which showed up first in the approval number. I thought it was a one
day good sample for Obama but that day rolled off the three day rolling
approval tracker today and his approval number actually went up…?

Accuracy as in they had Obama winning bigger than he did but they
were still accurate in that Obama won. I don’t really care if they’re
off a few points the fact is all these polls keep showing Obama ahead.
And how exactly with the price of gas, and food, and the cost of debt,
and the bad employment numbers along with the fact that NOBODY really
likes his Obamacare plan does this bastard get 50 to 51 percent job
approval. Romney is not running an effective campaign if this is the
case. Is he afraid to be tough?

This is a disaster.

Romney’s Secret Awesomeness Being Held Back by Romney Campaign

Doc’s having some kind of catastrophic technology meltdown right now, so no post from him this week. Instead you get me. And I’m annoyed. For a change. Oh for the fucking sake of the fucking fucking just … fuck me: Eager for access to the famously reserved candidate, reporters have generally agreed to the campaign’s terms for these “OTRs,” which have long been common practice on presidential campaigns. But the resulting interactions — rare, unfettered conversations with an unusually candid Romney — have left many of the traveling campaign reporters frustrated that they’re unable capture a side of the candidate … Continue reading Romney’s Secret Awesomeness Being Held Back by Romney Campaign
