Malaka Of The Week: Tom Cotton

There’s nothing as dangerous as a stupid person who believes that they’re intelligent and has all the answers when their knowledge could fit on the head of a pin. Bill-O calls them pinheads and I call them malakas but it’s the same idea We’ve seen a lot of malakatude from Republicans since President Obama took office. This sort of thinking reached either its apogee or nadir this week with the release of the simplistic, marginally literate, patronizing letter written by a Freshman Senator. And that is why Tom Cotton is malaka of the week. The Cotton letter has been called a lot of things … Continue reading Malaka Of The Week: Tom Cotton

Album Cover Art Wednesday: Smash Your Head Against The Wall

This 1971 John Entwistle LP popped into my mind while dealing with the frustrations of *trying* to upload my old blog. The title is taken from the song My Size, which made the Ox one of the original headbangers. Odd for a classically trained musician but true.

The album art was designed by Graham Hughes who did likewise for many Who albums including <drum roll> Odds & Sods. Speaking of credits, Entwistle played most of the instruments. Here’s the cover

David Brooks Thinks We Need to Out-Judge Poverty

I’m sure this is the answer:  But it’s increasingly clear that sympathy is not enough. It’s not only money and better policy that are missing in these circles; it’s norms. The health of society is primarily determined by the habits and virtues of its citizens. In many parts of America there are no minimally agreed upon standards for what it means to be a father. There are no basic codes and rules woven into daily life, which people can absorb unconsciously and follow automatically. Reintroducing norms will require, first, a moral vocabulary. These norms weren’t destroyed because of people with … Continue reading David Brooks Thinks We Need to Out-Judge Poverty

Today in Political Reporters Who Hate Reporting on Politics and Politicians

No shit, David Gregory:  On top of the ratings meltdown, Gregory had found himself mired in embarrassing on-air flaps. He violated Washington, D.C.’s gun laws by waving a 30-round magazinein front of the camera during an interview with the NRA’s Wayne LaPierre. And he was widely criticized for musing about whether Glenn Greenwald should be prosecuted for having “aided and abetted” NSA leaker Edward Snowden. Gregory had never been a natural heir to Tim Russert, even by his own admission. According to a former staffer, when Gregory got the job in 2008, he told a Russert producer, “I think one of … Continue reading Today in Political Reporters Who Hate Reporting on Politics and Politicians

Paragraph Of The Day: Bill-O Edition

One of the best things written about the shootout at the Bill-O fantasy factory is by Jeb Lund at Rolling Stone: This constant churning of preposterous shit runs through O’Reilly’s career like discarded picnic food through geese, a steaming heap of compensatory fantasy meeting defensive wish fulfillment. Media Matters could update daily by debunking The O’Reilly Factor alone. He claimed his tabloid show Inside Editionwon two Peabody Awards. He turned a comfortable childhood in the post-war suburban planned community of Levittown (with regular Florida vacations) into an Oliver Twist-tinged struggle, to complete the Horatio Alger arc corporealizing him as the American dream: “You don’t come from … Continue reading Paragraph Of The Day: Bill-O Edition

The Fog Of History: Selma

My default position on movies about historical events and people is that they’re more likely to be inaccurate than not. That was my assumption when I saw Selma, especially since the primary complainant, Joe Califano, is someone I admire and who was an integral part of everything good about the Johnson administration. This time I was wrong. Selma is not only historically accurate, it’s well above average in that regard. That’s why I see things before criticizing them. One bone of contention has been the first scene between MLK and LBJ. According to the Guardian’s reel history columnist, Alex von Tunzelmann, However, the … Continue reading The Fog Of History: Selma

MRGO Must GO

FromWWL

A coalition of scientists, environmentalists and politicians on Tuesday told the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to close — once and for all — a shipping channel that scientists say contributed to the devastating deluge of parts of eastern New Orleans, including the Lower 9th Ward, the home of Fats Domino.

The Corps is expected to release a report next Wednesday to outline what should be done with the Mississippi River-Gulf Outlet, a channel built in the 1960s that has destroyed hundreds of square miles of wetlands. It was built as a shortcut to New Orleans and a way to kick start the development of reclaimed swampland east of New Orleans that wound up drowned by Hurricane Katrina.

The coalition also issued a report, which said in part, “The Mississippi River Gulf Outlet, known locally as Mister Go, was a bad idea when constructed and has become a worse one every year.”

The document, unambiguously called “Mister Go Must Go,” was handed out to members of Congress, who will have a say on what direction the Corps takes.

It is indeed time for MRGO to go. Click Read More for the reasons.

Today on Tommy T’s Obsession with the Freeperati – how hath the flighty fallen edition

Good morning, everyone – not going to bother with the latest from Freeperville because it’s all HILLARYEMAILSZOMGALSOBENGHAZIIMPEACHIMPEACHALSOBENGHAZIEMAILS!!!1!

Ben Carson apologizes for comments on gay people
cnn.com ^ | 03/04/2015 | Eric Bradner

Posted on ‎3‎/‎4‎/‎2015‎ ‎7‎:‎06‎:‎22‎ ‎PM by GIdget2004

Washington (CNN)Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson apologized for commenting Wednesday that prisoners’ changes after they leave jail proves being gay is a choice, but said that the science is still murky on the issue.

In a statement, Carson said he “realized that my choice of language does not reflect fully my heart on gay issues.”

“I do not pretend to know how every individual came to their sexual orientation. I regret that my words to express that concept were hurtful and divisive. For that I apologize unreservedly to all that were offended,” he added.

Exactly…a MUCH BETTER reply would be to apologize to people that are ‘offended’ by the remark, and then double-down by stating that’s how he see’s it.

If he lets his ENEMIES run his campaign, he loses, immediately.

Ah – the classic “non-apology apology” – “I apologize if any of you rump rangers were offended rather than excited at the idea of being used as a sex toy by a violent lifer, because fuck you!”
Well, does anyone here have a better idea?

So, Carson shows his true colors – he’s no more than another gutless politician, a PC-driven coward, having no backbone to stand up for that which is morally right. He is willing to sacrifice ontological truth on the altar of political correctness, so as not to jeopardize his standing as a candidate for POTUS … I got news for you, Ben – you just blew your integrity right out of the water … You might as well pack your bags and go home, with your head hung in shame. Joe Klein Knows What’s Really Important: THE TONE

Jeb Bush, the new seriousness!  Bush’s speech wasn’t exactly a barn burner. His delivery was rushed and unconvincing, though he was more at ease during the question period. He was criticized for a lack of specificity. But Bush offered something far more important than specificity. He offered a sense of his political style and temperament, which in itself presents a grownup and civil alternative to the Giuliani-style pestilence that has plagued the Republic for the past 25 years. Are you kidding me? I mean it, are you kidding? Joke Line (who in case you needed reminding is a truly horrible … Continue reading Joe Klein Knows What’s Really Important: THE TONE

No More Welfare

If you feed the animals they just keep coming back:  Walgreen has been one of the principal drivers of a trend in which large retailers seek lower assessments, sometimes through lawsuits that small municipalities are ill-equipped to fight. The company and its lawyers have challenged assessments across the state, ultimately suing municipalities at least 50 times in the past decade. “More companies are bringing them,” said Amie Trupke, a Madison-based attorney who represents municipalities in assessment cases. “Walgreens was probably the pioneer. But now we have Sears, Target, Menards, Kohl’s, Fleet Farm, Farm & Fleet and the fast-food chains bringing … Continue reading No More Welfare

We Were Told He Was Evidence

A definition: Evidence, broadly construed, is anything presented in support of an assertion. This support may be strong or weak. The strongest type of evidence is that which provides direct proof of the truth of an assertion. And another:  Carter said family members were not allowed to see Robinson after he was pronounced dead. “We were told he was evidence,” Carter said. “He wasn’t referred to as ‘his son’ or ‘your son,’ just ‘evidence.’” The 50th anniversary of the Selma march means the Republican noise machine is full of angry, defensive bullshit this morning. Whites are the real victims of racism, black culture is … Continue reading We Were Told He Was Evidence

The Adrastos Wayback Machine: Re-entry Blues

The Adrastos archival project continues anon. It’s a real pain in the ass to upload all the files from my blog-city blog so it looks as if there will be a Best of Adrastos site coming to WordPress fairly soon. I’ll be doing it in bits and bobs because it’s an exhaustive, as well as exhausting project. I’ll let y’all know as soon as it’s online.

This is one of the first posts I wrote for my original blog. It tells the story of how we snuck back into town and how tricky it was to do so. That’s one of the lesser known things about everyone’s Katrina exile: how residents were kept out of the city while all sorts of alleged do-gooders were on the loose. It’s a detail that still aggravates both Dr. A and me and you’ll hear about it after the break.

Gotcha first

I found myself agreeing with Scott Walker for the first time in a long time about a week or two ago. Normally that would scare me, but to be fair, I came to this conclusion on my own and first. Walker had been in New York, courting the super-rich in hopes of being our dumbest president ever, when Rudy Giuliani decided to tell the world what every half-wit drunk uncle says at Thanksgiving: Obama hates America and he’s probably not a Christian. Giuliani deserved the shitstorm that came his way, but for utterly predictable reasons, the media ran to Walker … Continue reading Gotcha first

Friday Ferretblogging: Bucky vs. Cancer

In the past two weeks, Bucky started showing some weakness in his hind legs, and wandering around looking even more stoned than he normally does. Been through this before: Pancreatic cancer, which is what got Stripe and Puck and part of what took down Chicken-Riot. Still, I took him to the vet hoping maybe he was just, I don’t know, really BUMMED, or something. Blood tests, unfortunately, will out. What we do for this, since he is six and a half and after Stripe I vowed no more surgeries when they just regrow the insulinomas anyway, is give him meds twice a day. Already … Continue reading Friday Ferretblogging: Bucky vs. Cancer

Malaka Of The Week: Quin Hillyer

This week’s honoree is originally from New Orleans and we even have a few mutual friends; one of whom assured me a few years ago that Quin Hillyer was a “rational” conservative. After spending some time immersed in his oeuvre, I beg to differ, and that is why The Not So Mighty Quin Hillyer is malaka of the week. Hillyer is something of an itinerant right wing pundit: he writes for the Georges Advocate, American Spectator and, most notably for our purposes, the National Review. The day before Bibipalooza, Hillyer declared his fealty to Bibi in a bizarre piece for the NRO: In thanking America, Netanyahu was … Continue reading Malaka Of The Week: Quin Hillyer

Album Cover Art Wednesday: The Great Ball Of Fire

Jerry Lee Lewis is one of the great monsters in American cultural history. At the risk of repeating myself, check out Rick Bragg’s new book about the Killer. It’s amazeballs. Jerry Lee has finally found the perfect writer to tell his story with all of its contradictions. And Rick does not smooth over the Killer’s rough edges. Ain’t enough literary sandpaper in the world for that, y’all.

Jerry Lee was never much of an album artist, his attention span was too short for that,  so I thought I’d post the cover of this 1957 EP:

The Facts Don’t Matter if You’re Liberal, Guys!

WIN THE MORNING:  The journalists who raised the red flags on O’Reilly’s statements — David Corn and Daniel Schulman, of Mother Jones — started at a disadvantage. These weren’t war veterans who felt wronged by O’Reilly’s portrayal of events. They were liberal reporters at an admittedly liberal magazine going after the paragon of right-wing punditry. No matter what goods they had on O’Reilly, it would be easy for him to dismiss these detractors as left-wing zealots bent on his destruction (which he did.) Yeah! They’re liberals at a liberal magazine with liberal leanings and liberal tendencies and they probably smoke liberal weed and have … Continue reading The Facts Don’t Matter if You’re Liberal, Guys!

Child Predators are Notorious for Obeying the Rules

I do not get this fear:  For the past year, Houston has been embroiled in a debate over the ordinance. HERO, which passed in May, bans discrimination on the basis of characteristics like sex, race, disability status, sexual orientation, and gender identity. Opponents of HERO have since fought to put the measure up for a public repeal vote, baselessly claiming that the law would allow male sexual predators to sneak into women’s restrooms by pretending to be transgender. Experts in states and cities that have similar laws on the books have debunked this horror story, calling it “beyond specious.” This idea that there are rafts … Continue reading Child Predators are Notorious for Obeying the Rules

Call Any Vegetable

I’m not sure whether Pat Robertson is descending into senility or if he’s becoming an absurdist comedian. In either case, bless his heart:  Televangelist Pat Robertson said on Monday that marijuana users and drinkers are “enslaved to vegetables.” Speaking on his Christian Broadcasting Network television show “The 700 Club,” Robertson said that addiction is contrary to God’s will, because man has dominion over “all the vegetables.” Robertson continued: “Cocaine is the product of a vegetable, alcohol is the product of a vegetable, marijuana is a vegetable. And yet, people are enslaved to vegetables.” “Why would you become a slave to … Continue reading Call Any Vegetable

The Talk Of The Town

Remember Chris Rose who was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for his personalized reporting on Katrina and the Federal Flood? His decline and fall is the subject of a very fine profile  in the Columbia Journalism Review by Michael Patrick Welch. It’s a poignant piece but also illustrates Rose’s self-absorption, which part of the reason for his downfall. He’s a very talented writer whose other main talent is bridge burning. I know that sounds harsh but my encounters with the man were quite unpleasant. I’ll leave it at that. I don’t believe in kicking a man when he’s down even if he is … Continue reading The Talk Of The Town

Valentine’s Day: Did any FReepers enjoy time with their Daughters today?

I didn’t see any FReeper Valentine’s day stories, which usually means hanging out with your significant other (ie. Honey).

Anyone here hang out with their lovely daughters today?

Eww

I’m a divorced man with two grown children.Today, I travelled 2 1/2 hours from Eastern Washington to Seattle to hang out with my grown daughter. She is a professional and a college graduate who is living the big life in the big city.I don’t see her often anymore, but today I arrived at her place late morning bearing purple carnations (her favorite color), a Starbucks gift card, (Hey, this is Seattle, and she loves coffee like Dad).We went out to brunch, (Dad treated of course), we stopped and got some more coffee on our way back to her place. And then I did some Dad projects for her in her apartment. We laughed, cried and discussed old times, we had a great time. And then I drove home thinking, just, damn, they grow up so quickly. I love her so much.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

The daddys were all standing around embarrassed or something (I guesstimate maybe a hundred “couples” (the entire elementary schoo was invited) so that’s a lot of guys not knowing what to do during the thump, thump, thump

Boo Yah!

Morning.

Take her to Lucques in Beverly Hills for brunch/lunch. I recommend the patio and whatever specialty drink they are serving. It’s different every month and better than simple Mimosa.

After you’ve got her liquored up a little, you can make your move.

relaxed atmosphere, just really terrific food with great service.

The wait staff have all the knowledge you require about anything on the menu but, a soft touch about it. They’re not snobs and won’t drone on.

They are also accomodating about special requests.

Food is wonderful and plated so as to invite the eyes to take it in just before you your mouth savors whatever is delish.

Newspapers Don’t Need Help From the Internet to Kill Journalism

If these people worked on mimeograph machines, or their job was just to stand in the town square yelling the news at people, they would still find a way to fuck it up:  Circulation was falling fast when I joined the paper in September 2010, and I suspect this panicked the owners. Waves of sackings started, and the management made it plain that it believed the future of the British press to be digital.
