Wow, I Feel Whiter Already

Not that I made a habit of hanging out in Homer Township, but Isure as hell won’t be going there anytime soon: The leaders of Homer Township—in Will County, in the southwest suburbs—have brought a little bit of Arizona to the metro Chicago area, passing a resolution declaring English as their official language. As Fox News Chicago reports, township clerk Steve Balich, a resolution backer, admits that Homer doesn’t evenhavean immigrant “problem,” but “you have to start somewhere and so we’re starting here.” He hopes other places will learn about the resolution and “have the courage to stand up and do … Continue reading Wow, I Feel Whiter Already

Gonna Git Yer Guns

The NRA andits “evolving” mission: Do you want to continue to sell guns to criminals, terrorists, and those not of sound mind through the gun show loophole — unlike 69% of NRA members and 85% of non-NRA gun owners who support a simple background check at gun shows to prevent this insanity? And look. This is a membership organization, and eventually the membership bears responsibility for what it does and what it stands for. LaPierre is an asshole who isn’t interested in advancing the rights of gun owners as much as he’s interested in jerking himself off at the Republican … Continue reading Gonna Git Yer Guns

Taxed Enough Already

If only someone would letthose hardworking rich people off the hook once in a while: Imprisoned former media baron Conrad M. Black is fighting a $71 million bill from theU.S. Internal Revenue Service, which says from 1998 to 2003 he filed no tax returns and paid absolutely nothing on $120 million in taxable income. In a previously unreported lawsuit inU.S. Tax Court, Black, now serving a six-and-a-half-year-sentence in a Florida federal prison, is challenging the IRS’ demands and asserting the income in question wasn’t taxable in the U.S. Black is not the only convicted former top official of Hollinger being … Continue reading Taxed Enough Already

Rising Tide Treme Panel

It’s shameless plug time again. Back of Town founder Maitri Erwin has assembled a crack panel to discuss HBO’s great new-ish show, Treme. Maitri will moderate and will be joined on the panel by Treme co-honcho Eric Overmyer, staff writers Lolis Eric Elie and Davis Rogan, our very own Virgo Tex and Times-Picayune teevee maven Dave Walker. For more details about the panel check out Maitri’s post at Back of Town. For more information about and/or to register for Rising Tide 5 click here. Continue reading Rising Tide Treme Panel

Today on Tommy T’s Obsession with the Freeperati – procrastinator’s edition

p>Good morning, everyone!

This edition of Obsession is being written at 4:30AM CST with very little planning of structure – a First Draft, if you will.

And even if you won’t.

Why? Because I was a lazy procrastinating jerk, that’s why. Ok – we’re just going to grab random saved threads and throw them against the walls of the iso chamber and see what sticks.

First up –“Tea Party a go-gone!‏”

Effective Immediately, Tea Party Express Is No Longer a Member of the
National Tea Party Federation

Date: Sat, 17 Jul 2010 at 3:43pm

Last
night, the members of the National Tea Party Federation participating
in an “All Hands” conference call unanimously decided the following:

The
membership of the National Tea Party Federation has this evening
suspended and will immediately expel Tea Party Express from any further
association with the Federation should they fail to publicly rebuke Mark
Williams and remove him from their ranks by 3 pm eastern time Saturday
July 17.

The rebuke must take the following form:

1. Mark
Williams must be officially removed from the ranks of the Tea Party
Express.

2. Notice of Mark Williams’ removal must be placed
prominently on the official Tea Party Express website.

3. Tea
Party Express must issue a press release articulating points 1 and 2
above.

Last night, a member of the National Tea
Party Federation communicated our decision directly to a member of the
leadership team of Tea Party Express. That leader’s response was clear:
they have no intention of taking the action we required for their group
to continue as a member of the National Tea Party Federation.

Therefore,
effective immediately the National Tea Party Federation is expelling
Tea Party Express from the ranks of our membership.

Actually, you could have stopped after “I have no idea”.

To: Sasquatch the Original

I have no idea about this either. IMHO the Tea Party is a close
knit group of independent voters with like goals. There is no main
organization per say(sic).

So – you’re saying that you supportthe Tea Party “movement”, but have absolutely no idea what it consists of, or who’s running it and funding it. Got it.

To: Sasquatch the Original

Well, a house divided against itself cannot stand. This is just
what we need 108 days before the Mid-Term Elections. What in the world
did this Mark Williams dude do?

But, of course, stillnot racist.

To: Sasquatch the Original

I don’t like it from the little I know about the incident. It looks
like a successful tactic to divide Tea Party People,

So this was the tactic of the Tea Party people? I swear to Bog, if one of these crazies shot the other one in a public place for the contents of his wallet, these idiots would claim that the Dems planted the cash to tempt him.

or at least make it
look like the people who attend Tea Parties and the Tea Party express
stops are not united in a common goal.

I’ve been to both types of
events and both have mostly the same people there.

White.

The left will
feed off this.

Most defnitely someone else will express what i’m going to try
to—
the tea party will now be divided along the lines of “divide and
conquer”

Um – “Divide and conquer” as a strategy is done by an external source.

These nincompoops are doing this to themselves.

and by demanding Williams leaves, they acknowledge as truth that the tea
party has racists—

Duh

as i’m not at all familiar—googled Mark Williams racist…and got
the impression that he replied to the n doubleA cp’s charges of racism
the same way others have, including Breitbart, who states he has video as
well proving this naacp is the racist bunch.

p>Bright Fart also states he has video proving that O’Keefe didn’t violate California’s Invasion Of Privacy Act.

Maybe he’ll post video of himself getting raped in a prison cell? I hear the “Girls Gone Wild” guy was released lately – maybe he could distribute.

Is this the Judean Peoples Front, or the Peoples Front of Judea
moment?

Neither you idiot! It’s clearly the Front of Judean
Peoples, and if you actually had a clue you would understand the obvious
difference!

Now let’s talk about what the Romans never did for
us…

The Hope of All Mankind

It’s like nobody lets me express myself anymore: An example of that happened today. And it is a crying shame. We are fighting for the future of not just this nation but for the future of Mankind. That’s just a little more important than my fat head, or the apparently even fatter head on Face the Nation Today who misrepresented himself as the tea party “leader”. I was in the air all day today winging my way home from a successful, nationally broadcast conference on race in not just the tea party movement but as a too common staple of … Continue reading The Hope of All Mankind

Brett Favre: Runaway Slave

Yeah, what she said… I don’t think I could have put it better than Firewoman, so I’m not going to try: The fact that the r-word is even being used is due to the unfortunate circumstance that Gilbert happens to be white, and James happens to be black. What if they were both the same race? Would Gilbert have still written that letter? You bet he would have because Gilbert’s open letter is not racially motivated. Consider Brett Favre and recent Green Bay Packer history. Lots of name-calling, jersey-burning and billboard-bashing everywhere because Favre retired than un-retired a few dozen … Continue reading Brett Favre: Runaway Slave

Friday Catblogging: Oscar & Della Go To The Vet

Dr. A and I have been talking our cats to the same vet for over 20 years. We started going to him when he and I both had hair;talk about a long time gone. When Della Street gets stressed, she gets really pink in the ears and on her face. She was pink Wednesday, y’all. Oscar was as cool as a kitty cucumber. They both passed their yearly exam with flying colors. Dr. A took some photos of them before the exam. We resisted the temptation to snap the rectal probe: Continue reading Friday Catblogging: Oscar & Della Go To The Vet

Malaka Of The Week: Tom Benson

Tom Benson is the car dealer who owns the Saints and an increasing number of properties in downtown New Orleans. His star has waxed and waned over the years but right now his public stock is pretty high because of a certain football game earlier this year. I’ve always considered Benson to be a malaka; mostly because of his repeated attempts to get taxpayers to pay for a new stadium for his team. Right after Katrina and the federal flood, Benson seriously considered moving the Saints to San Antonio but it didn’t happen in large part because then NFL Commish … Continue reading Malaka Of The Week: Tom Benson

Art, Dahling

Oh, boy, it’s Christmas morning for Brent Bozell, because somebody dug Andres Serrano out of his damn hole and now Bozell can recall the glory days of being aReal Live Boy Freedom Warrior in the war on self-indulgent attention whore art, ie, That Summer I Totally Illustrated Your Point For You: The half-dozen contestants, 20-something aspiring artists all, enter the famous Phillips de Pury art auction house. Mr. de Pury himself ushers them into the special room where they are presented with a collection of paintings by Andres Serrano, the man who came to fame in 1989 with the ghastly … Continue reading Art, Dahling

Starting to Not See A Way Out

This: Unemployment is stucknear ten percent, and that will sink the Democrats in Congress if it does not come down. The only possible exception would be if they put forth another big stimulus bill and forced Republicans to spend a long, hot summer blocking it in the most high profile way possible – with an actual filibuster. The various procedural maneuvers Republicans have used to bring the Senate to a crawl donot really register outside the Beltway. In a way that makes sense; Democrats have the majority, and if they cannot implement their policies with it they deserve to be … Continue reading Starting to Not See A Way Out

Working Class Hero

The human impact of the BP oiltastrophe has been playing out this week in front of the Presidential Commission investigating this seemingly endless clusterfuck.Drew Landry, a South Louisiana crawfisherman, testified in part by singing a tune that he wrote about the human costs of the spill. He sounded a bit like Steve Earle, which is a good thing in my book. If he adds a nice bridge to the song he could have a hit on his hands. Mr. Landry himself was a big hit with the commissioners because of his candor and down home charm. p align=”center” class=”asset asset-video” style=”display: … Continue reading Working Class Hero

When Should You Learn Sex Anxiety?

ViaSeth, this is the WTF flag on the top of Mount WTF which I have climbed today wearing my WTF parka: Helena school trustees were swamped Tuesday night at a hearing that left many of the hundreds of parents in attendance standing outside a packed board room. They urged the school board in this city nestled in the Rocky Mountains to take the sex education program back to the drawing board. The proposed 62-page document covers a broad health and nutrition education program and took two years to draft. But it is the small portion dealing with sexual education that … Continue reading When Should You Learn Sex Anxiety?

So, Patrick Spain, the New York Times Still Breathes

A year ago: Nobody Knows What To Do That’s primarily what I took away fromChicago Media Future this afternoon, that and a dislike ofPatrick Spain of Newser.com, who spent his entire time on the afternoon panel making the following assertions: 1. Nobody with fewer than 5 million hits daily is making any money online. 2. Politico has replaced the Washington Post as a source of good political information. 3. HuffPo will replace the New York Times. 4. The New York Times will not exist one year from today. Hmm. ‘Demand What You Paid For’

THIS: You worked hard and played by the rules, and now people in expensive suits who sat in offices recklessly gambling with other people’s money want to stop you from being able to retire. They exported jobs to other countries and made it harder to start new businesses to create new jobs. They slashed government spending to the point where even schools are closing. They failed to honor contracts that said they would put money into your pension fund, and now there is no pension fund. And now they want your unemployment insurance so they can gamble that away, too. … Continue reading ‘Demand What You Paid For’

The Hollow Man

New York Magazine has a must read profile of John McCain by Joe Hagan: John McCain sits stock-still, eyes shadowed by his wiry eyebrows, hair combed down slick and straight, mouth turned down in grim resolve. On a stage in a high-school auditorium in Mesa, Arizona, against the backdrop of a 30-foot American flag, this is what a statue of Senator John Sidney McCain III might look like: Veteran. Hero. Maverick. The problem is that he’s sitting next to Mitt Romney, who, at six foot two, towers over him like a tanned and gleaming giant. McCain looks like Ed McMahon … Continue reading The Hollow Man

Krauthammer Feeling Threatened

Krauthammer: There was no finer expression of belief in American exceptionalism than Kennedy’s. Obama has a different take. As he said last year in Strasbourg, France, “I believe in American exceptionalism, just as I suspect that the Brits believe in British exceptionalism and the Greeks believe in Greek exceptionalism.” Which of course means: If we’re all exceptional, no one is. Take human rights. After Obama’s meeting with the president of Kazakhstan, Michael McFaul of the National Security Council reported that Obama actually explained to the leader of that thuggish kleptocracy that we too are working on perfecting our own democracy. … Continue reading Krauthammer Feeling Threatened
