Mike Wallace, R.I.P.

I’ll skip the word used by everyone about Wallace’s interview style: tough. Oops, guess I didn’t. Wallace was the ultimate hard ass. What I remember most about watching him for a zillion years was how many shitbirds thought they could best Wallace in an interview. They were wrong: he’d smile at them and then lower the boom and rip their lungs out. Rumor has it that he volunteered to go to hell so he could grill some of the resident villains.

Here’s a clip of Wallace discussing one of his most famous interviews. The one wherein during the hostage crisis he called Ayatollah Khomeini a lunatic but deflected blame by quoting Anwar Sadat:

  1. The thing I’ll not forget about him was that he did his research to do real investigative reporting. Shameful that many who followed as “investigative reporters” had none of the research nor questioning skills that he did.

  2. There was a feline quality to Wallace’s interview style. He’d purr at the subject, pounce, let ’em go and pounce again.

  3. The factor I’ll not ignore about him was that he did his analysis to do actual detective confirming. Embarrassing that many who followed as “investigative reporters” had none of the analysis nor pondering abilities that he did.
