James Buchanan Abides

I like lists; one of my favorites is the annual historian’s ranking of  our presidents. I’ve resisted the temptation to make my own list because I don’t know what to do with slave owners. Then there’s Lyndon Johnson. Without the Vietnam War LBJ could be  ranked first or second because of his monumental accomplishments in the areas of civil rights, health care, immigration, and on and on and on. LBJ arguably surpassed his hero FDR except for Vietnam. Such a pesky war.

There was one constant on the presidential ratings lists, James Buchanan came in last. His resume shows him as qualified: congressman, senator, secretary of state, and ambassador. However, Buchanan was a weak man easily pushed around by the Southern wing of the Democratic party. They called pliable and easily bullied Northern men such as Buchanan dough faces. No wonder he was such a loser for so long.

James Buchanan was at the bottom of the lists for decades. James Buchanan abided as the worst president in American history.

Personally, I’d rank Andrew Johnson below Buchanan but I’m an amateur historian, so nobody asked me.

James Buchanan is finally free of his status as worst president. It took a few years, but the Indicted Impeached Insult Comedian is now America’s bottom boy. I suspect the Dipshit Insurrection has something to do with it. GOPers might not mind Trump’s fucking with the constitutional order, but everyone else should.

Trump is the worst. Andrew Johnson is close, but James Buchanan abides as the second worst president in American history.

The last word goes to a better Buchanan, Roy:

  1. Apparently historians were only gaging domestic issues. I’d put George W. Bush near the bottom: an unnecessary, preemptive war that destabilized the Levant and created a migration crisis that emboldened authoritarians in Europe.
