Stop Trying To Make The Pivot Happen

It was supposed to be a kinder, gentler TFG on the stage Thursday night. The press was rapturously anticipating it. Here’s a taste of their unfettered lust for New Trump ™:

And the TV people were so excited to read the first part of the speech aloud before TFG took the stage. Could this really be the moment they had all waited 8 years for? Could this finally be the time that TFG, humbled and changed after his near death experience, would his old ways, and emerge as the leader they craved?

Of course not. TFG is a one note wonder, and that note is “MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE”. He was extremely angry that he had to share the stage with the uniform of a dead person that he didn’t know and who didn’t give him millions of dollars.  He was furious that he had to pretend he was sad he’d been shot and that he had to talk about God so much. He was openly resentful that he had to say platitudes about violence being bad and the need for reconciliation and healing.

And so he delivered the first part of his speech, after being out of the public ear for a week, in the flat monotone of a child forced to recite a memorized passage as a punishment. It wasn’t the usual unhinged TFG spectacle, and I suppose that that was a small victory.

And you knew it wouldn’t last. Bottled up for a week and finally opened on Thursday night, his simmering resentment burst out, this time in front of an audience that hasn’t been watching his rallies for the last 4 years. It was all there—insulting Nancy Pelosi. Getting his running mate’s name wrong. Hannibal Lecter. All sprinkled in during a monologue of how put upon he is, and how only truly great people like Kim Jong Un and the Taliban can appreciate how great he is.

Most fittingly, there was no vision for how his second term would help anyone but himself. Now maybe some of the reason for that was that we’ve all now seen Project 2025, and we know what’s coming. But mainly it was because, at his core, TFG doesn’t give a shit about anyone but himself.

And last night voters who don’t follow his rallies got to see who he is now:  a sweaty petulant manbaby who lives in an imaginary world.

Last night it was obvious that TFG can be beaten.

I’ll close with something from the Mean Girls.

  1. It was pretty easy to tell, too, which newscasters and pundits WATCHED the speech and which just read the advance text, from which Trump deviated many times, never in a positive direction, after the initial 15 minutes or so.
