How To Fight Back

A protest in London last month.

Instead of the usual post about the terrible stuff happening, today I wanted to focus a little on what we can actually do.

I also deeply feel Adrastos’ lament about how tough it can to write right now that he mentioned in his morning post.

Last night I was part of Indivisible’s national “We Choose to Fight Back” phone call. My wife and I have been doing some things like emailing our reps and senators but were looking for more direction.

If you were looking for any sort of reassurance that things are not so bad or defense of elected Dems’ inaction, you came to the wrong place. The tone was serious, but at the same time, not doomer. It was about taking action, and part of that was pressuring our elected officials to do more.

You can watch the call if you like here.

More information on what to do can be found here at Indivisible’s site.

The good news is there seemed to be a big turnout for it, the Zoom quickly maxed out so you had to watch it on Youtube, which was more than fine. I do think that there are people who want to take action.

Mostly this action takes the form of calling/emailing, which as the wife/husband former Dem staffer team of Ezra and Leah Levin pointed out last night, really does work. Pressure from their constituents makes politicians nervous, and nervous politicians are a good thing. They also mentioned going directly to Congressional local offices to voice your opinion, and also shared potential gatherings at Congressional offices to protest.

One thing many of us were hoping would happen seems to be happening now, and that’s stepping up the communications game:

Despite some people yelling at those of us for being upset with Biden welcoming Trump back with smiles and happy posed photos, there really seems to be evidence that our main worry that it would make people not really paying attention to think nothing is amiss because “Biden said ‘welcome back’ to Trump so how bad can it be if Biden said that” is confusing to people being told now that Trump is destroying the nation. I’ve been seeing it online and heard it in person from a friend over the weekend. This is a good first step towards raising awareness.

In any event, if you feel overwhelmed and want to try doing something, anything, I hope this is a good start. Keep in mind, if you ever wondered what you might do in dark moments in history like 1930s Germany, here we are.
