You Took Advantage Of Me

I’ve had Rodgers & Hart on my mind since writing about Richard Linklater’s Blue Moon. Larry Hart was perhaps the finest lyricist of his generation, which was a big deal considering the competition included Cole Porter, Ira Gershwin, Yip Harburg, and Johnny Mercer.

Lorenz Hart and Richard Rodgers wrote You Took Advantage Of Me in 1928 for the Broadway military musical Present Arms. I’m using it to send a subliminal message to wavering Trump voters. The Kaiser of Chaos took advantage of all of you.

We begin with Ella Fitzgerald:

I’d never heard Buddy Rich sing before this. He’s not bad but he was a much better drummer.

Tony Bennett. Say no more.

Linda Ronstadt cut the Rodgers & Hart classic in 1984 with Nelson Riddle:

Speaking of Nelson Riddle, here’s George Clooney’s auntie backed by the Riddler; Nelson, not Gorshin.

Lady Day’s voice was going when she cut this tune, but she gave it everything she had left.

What’s the Friday Cocktail Hour without instrumental versions of the week’s tune? This time, Bunny Berrigan followed by Keith Jarrett with Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette.

That’s it for this week. Let’s drink to the wavering Trump voters ready to leave the cult over Epstein and Iran. It’s what Andrew Scott as Dick Rodgers and Ethan Hawke as Larry Hart would want. Never argue with them.
