Ratbags & Gladrags

You’re probably wondering why the featured image is King Charles with Rod Stewart and Ron Wood. It’s because of a comment made by Sir Rod at the most recent King’s Trust event. It’s Charles’ personal charity which began life as the Prince’s Trust before Charles was promoted to King.

Here’s what the venerable rocker had to say about Charles’ recent state visit to Washington:

“May I say, well done in the Americas. You were superb. Absolutely superb. You put that little ratbag in his place.”

The Insult Comedian is big ratbag but otherwise I concur with Stewart.

This quote piqued my interest because Stewart is as well known for his right-wing views as for asking the world whether he’s sexy. Last year, he admitted to socializing with Trump at Mar-a-Lago:

“I’m not a great fan of Trump,” he said. “I knew him very, very well. I used to go to his house. I live literally half a mile away [in Florida] … We’re both on the beach. I used to go to his Christmas parties. He’s always been a bit of a man’s man. I liked him for that. But he didn’t, as far as I’m concerned, treat women very well. But since he became president, he became another guy. Somebody I didn’t know.”

Stewart said he turned against Trump because of his attacks on the role of the British military during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. The Kaiser of Chaos was projecting when he said British forces stayed away from the fighting. That’s a blood libel in my book: Team Bush dragged the Brits into those wars and they fought well in those unwise conflicts.

In contrast, Trump dodged the draft in a war in which working class Americans did most of the fighting and dying, Vietnam. That’s the same demographic that supported Trump during his 3 national campaigns. Oy, just oy.

Rod Stewart hasn’t repented his right-wing ways. He supports Reform UK, the party led by the UK’s Trump mini-me Nigel Farage. Farage has been running away from Trump recently as the latter’s brand has become toxic in Britain. If Trump has lost Nige and Rod, he’s lost the UK.

The last thing I expected to write about today was Rod Stewart but my philosophy as a blogger is a simple one: When a post topic falls in your lap, write about it.

This is yet another post that came to life because of a title. There’s a lovely song on Stewart’s eponymous first album called Handbags & Gladrags. All you have to do is change hand to rat and Rod’s your right-wing Uncle.

Repeat after me: The real King handbagged the faux King.

The last word goes to Rod Stewart:
