WV’s History Rhymes In The Rain

You may have heard about the catastrophic weather that came through parts of West Virginia last week. Four tornadoes touched down, one of which had a 10 mile long track. But it was the flooding that caused the widespread damage and deaths. Up to 7 inches of rain fell, which flooded areas that are not in any historical flood plains:

And:

If this seems like a repeat of something I’ve written about before, you’re right.

Both of those posts talk about how the last 2 governors of WV did and continue to do nothing about the flooding problems in West Virginia. You would think at the very least the state would do a new survey of the flood plains, right? Nope. Studies are announced and then nothing happens. The out-of-state millionaires who own the WV GOP don’t care about how the rest of us live. They only care about taking what little resources we have.

This situation is so awful that I can just repurpose what I wrote last year because all that has changed in the quote below is, literally, the day of the week that the federal disaster designation was requested:

In The Good Old Days the federal government would be on the scene in the guise of FEMA, with short and long term help for flood victims. But those days are gone. The governor asked for a federal disaster designation on Monday and the response has been…silence.

When asked whether Morrisey was concerned about such pushes at the federal level — especially in light of West Virginia’s recent (and historic) needs — the governor said he was “not going to get into any of those issues right now.”

“I want to make sure that we have systems that work at the local level, that work at the state level, and then I want to partner effectively with the relevant folks on the federal side as well,” Morrisey said. “I’m going to focus on what’s the readiness, the preparedness, that we have right here in West Virginia.”

Morrisey, Capito, Justice, and WV’s 2 House reps, Carol Miller and my useless rep Riley Moore, have all been furiously licking President Grievance’s boots for months now. It’s been kind of uncomfortable to watch. And now they’re learning first hand that it doesn’t matter—and more importantly that they don’t matter. And soon the WV MAGAts will learn the same hard truth. And they’re about to learn it again. Now Shelley Capito did show up at one of the affected areas for a few hours because she’s running for reelection and so of course needed to make an appearance. And she signed a letter asking for assistance. And so that’s supposed to be enough.

Jim Justice didn’t even go to the affected areas because he’s not up for reelection. Carole Miller showed up for a few hours and she and Jim both want you to know they signed the letter asking for federal aid.

My MAGA House rep went for a few hours and posted this cringe:

Please note his fake tearful emoting. Because that’s how you motivate Trump to do something:  cry in front of that sadist.

And how did Mr. I Am So Very Worried spend Wednesday night with all the flooding is in his district? On this complete bullshit:

The governor has made more visits, but that’s his job, and he’s already washed his hands of any flooding issues (noted in my earlier posts) so big deal. And guess what? There is still no federal disaster declaration.

This is rage-inducing because these same people have been lying on their bellies assiduously licking Trump’s boots for 2 years straight now. They voted to take healthcare from WVians, to close rural hospitals, and to take food from hungry children. They have stayed on their bellies as Trump started an unlawful war. They have remained supine as Trump murdered over 100 innocent Iranian school girls.

They remained prostrate, tongues out, after 2 young WV National Guard members were shot in DC, and one of them lost her life. They have been silent as these state residents have been kept in DC, away from their families and their jobs, and often at a financial hit to their families. They have been silent as Trump continues to break norms and the law.

And? Because a week later there is still no federal disaster designation for WV, the Trumpiest state in the union. But there are homes lost and lives lost and livelihoods lost. And none of them care, just like Trump doesn’t care.

But do you know who cares?  The 2 Democrats running against them. Both of them have been on the ground, collecting supplies, and helping people in person, and without any camera crews on them. And WVians need to stop voting for the people who abandon them the minute constituents need help. It’s reprehensible that the WV GOP has been willing to sacrifice the health and lives of their voters and it’s baffling why anyone would reward them for their dereliction of duty.

I’ll leave you with this:
