Let’s take a walk down memory lane.

In 1983 Daniel Crane, a House rep from Illinois, was censured for a having sex with a 17 year old female page. He was censured by the House and then ran for reelection. He lost.

In 1995 Bob Packwood, a Senator from Oregon, resigned after facing expulsion from the Senate after charges of sexual abuse. Nineteen women came forward. As it turns out, Packwood kept a diary, part of which he voluntarily offered to give the Senate 5000 pages from his diary. Five thousand pages. As it turned out, there were 3200 more pages, i.e., the unredacted ones which detailed his sexual abuse. Mitch McConnell, in the midst of the Clinton impeachment, acknowledged that the seat would most likely be won by a Democrat (Roy Wyden won it), but it had to be done because the choice was in his now famous words, “retain the Senate seat or retain our honor”.

In 2006 Mark Foley, a House rep from Florida, resigned after it came out that he had sent sexually suggestive and explicit emails and instant messages to teenaged male House pages. Although Foley was something of a moderate, he turned up at a Trump rally in 2016.

Birds of a feather stick together.

Former Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert was already out of office when the charges of financial misconduct were brought against him in 2015, misconduct that was of interest to the FBI as far back as 2012. The financial arrangement turned out to be, you guessed it, hush money Hastert had been paying to a student he had sexually abused while Hastert was a high school wrestling coach in the 1970s. In all 4 former students came forward as his victims.

In 2017, on the eve of a special House election in Montana, Greg Gianforte assaulted a reporter. He immediately lied to the police about what happened, but eventually pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault. He won his race after Trump celebrated his violent act. He is currently the governor of Montana.

In 2017 Trent Franks, a House rep from Arizona, resigned after he was accused of sexual harassment. Specifically, he was accused of harassing 2 of his aides to become surrogate mothers for his wife by having sex with both of them. He resigned within hours of the allegations becoming public.

In 2018 Patrick Meehan, a House rep from Pennsylvania, resigned after he was accused of using taxpayer money to settle a sexual harassment suit against one of his staff members.

In 2022 Tom Reed, a House rep from New York, resigned after the House opened an ethics investigation into allegations that he unhooked the bra of a female lobbyist and began rubbing her back without invitation or permission while at an event.

You of course remember that Matt Gaetz was credibly accused of child sex trafficking and statutory rape. He resigned in 2024 because Trump wanted to nominate him as Attorney General of the US. Notice a pattern? The House Ethics Committee report on his actions was buried. Hmm.

Tony Gonzalez, a House rep from Texas, resigned in 2026 after allegations surfaced of his sexually harassing a staff member who later committed suicide.

Cory Mills is a House rep from Texas who is under investigation for assaulting his mistress in 2025, has also been accused of threatening a former mistress with releasing revenge porn. He is still in office although FOX reported last month that he is the subject of an active DOJ investigation, as well as an ongoing House Ethics Committee investigation.
