I’ve been waiting for Republicans to start acting like politicians and run away from their dear leader. It’s finally happening:
Florida gubernatorial candidate Byron Donalds, the Miami Herald noticed yesterday, scrubbed his campaign website of almost any mention of Trump’s name. He is, of course, not the first. Mike Beltran, running in Florida for a U.S. House seat, changed his website so that rather than stating he “felt inspired by President Trump’s 2016 victory,” it now explains he felt “called to public service.” Joe Mitchell, running in Iowa, once described himself as a “trusted voice in the MAGA movement” who would “always fight for the hard-working Iowans who have made their support for President Trump loud and clear.” Now, the Washington Post noticed, he promises to “clean up Washington and put working families first.”
The Iran War is driving voters away from the MAGA GOP. It’s never been popular and its impact on gas and diesel prices are repelling voters. They should have found Trump repellant years ago.
In Iowa, embattled senate candidate Rep. Ashley Hinson snubbed JD Vance out of political necessity not good taste. She’s calling for an immediate end to the Iran War, which she’s voted in favor of SEVEN times. Hinson finds herself behind Democrat Josh Turek in the race to succeed Joni Ernst.
This Trump dumping means that he won’t have a chance to make wheelchair jokes about Josh Turek thereby sealing Hinson’s fate.
In Ohio, appointed Senator Jon Husted has voted THIRTEEN times in favor of Trump’s war. Sherrod Brown’s campaign to return to the senate has Husted squirming like a cat on a hot tin roof over Iran and data centers.
Iowa and Ohio aren’t the only red state senate seats up for grabs: Nebraska and Kansas are actually in play. Kansans haven’t elected a Democrat to the senate since 1932 and George McGill only won because of the Roosevelt landslide.
It’s feeling more like 2006 every day: An unpopular Republican president is presiding over a bad economy and a disastrous war in the Middle East. Trump’s problems are even worse than W’s. Bush was widely disliked but Trump is widely hated. It’s hard to get past that.
My favorite Trumpist runaway is Byron Donalds. He was a nobody Congressman from Florida until he started fluffing the Kaiser of Chaos. Now, he’s scrubbing Trump’s name from his campaign web site.
There isn’t a sponge or cleaning solution strong enough to scrub the Trump stink off Byron Donalds. He’s now in a close race with David Jolly that could make the latter Florida’s first Democratic governor in the 21st Century. That’s a big fucking deal. No wonder Donalds is a runaway Republican.
