Rubber Souls & Rubber Soles

The Beatles spent some of the mid-’60s getting punny with a couple of album titles. Today is a big day for the first one as Rubber Soul gets the box set treatment.

The Trump administration got a jump on the occasion by kicking all the chairs out from under TSA agents working the ID station. That’s right, they’ll be standing for the duration of their shifts now — and no doubt fresher, friendlier, and happier to be there than ever for you, the traveling American.

Did Li’l Donnie or Eric buy a bunch of stock in Dr. Scholl’s, or what?

The official line is some Hegsethian b.s. that might as well have worked in the need for a “warrior posture” and whatnot.

I’ve posted Springsteen b-sides for flimsier excuses than this. Cue the boogie-woogie.

This is just another maneuver in 2nd-term Trump’s war of passive aggression on TSA employees (and by extension, everyone who flies … or flies commercial, anyway).

Last spring, driving off over 830 TSA employees was a bonus for Mike Johnson and House lackeys who shut down the government. And THAT was only a few months after the shutdown where we lost over 1,000 TSA workers.

It’s a prime 2nd-term problem when you’d have to pause to recall which shutdown was because Republicans really, really wanted to price thousands of people off their health insurance and which shutdown was to stonewall (some more) over the Epstein Files.

Workers at the TSA and elsewhere can’t just hang out with no paycheck forever. As modern conventional wisdom goes, when you get down to the real reason for leaving, it’s usually the boss, not the job.

Experience is valuable (to taxpayers).
Training is expensive (for taxpayers).
Abuse people for so long, and one day you’ll come back and …

The GOP’s power base is chock full of rubber souls and plasticene people. We can only hope the midterms electorate won’t stand for another Congress who enables this stuff, either.

With the Trump voter suppression effort hurtling toward an inevitably tense election day and the polling sites themselves now, the Democratic Party’s wisest investment after GOTV efforts and lawyers might involve handing out comfy insoles.

Let’s walk it off and sing along with Lowell and associates.
