We also need to make it harder for people to buy powerful assault weapons, like the ones that were used in San Bernardino. I know there are some who reject any gun-safety measures, but the fact is that our intelligence and law-enforcement agencies, no matter how effective they are, cannot identify every would-be mass shooter, whether that individual was motivated by ISIL or some other hateful ideology.
What we can do, and must do, is make it harder for them to kill.
But but but … OMG STABBINGCRIMES do you want to outlaw all knives! You can have my Chicago Cutlery when you pry it from my cold dead turkey-carving hands, mofo. The point is I want to kill 14 people, that will take a while with even the best knives on the planet. It will take seconds with a machine gun, and come on. You are neither resisting tyranny with it nor hunting for Bambi. Anybody who needs an AR-15 to hunt needs a lot more practice.
I don’t know how we get through to people when dead first graders don’t do it. I really don’t know. Maybe we need an army of first graders to stand in the halls of Congress and make those assholes look at the kids every time they go to work, but they have grandchildren, most of them. They should be able to see the reality of the situation. If they’ve turned that off, I don’t think there’s anything we can do for them.
