Worst. Ever. Period.

Military reporter Joe Galloway hits hard in his column“George, Dick, Don, Congress: You’re doing a heckuva job … ruining America”

The president says that there’ll be tough fighting to come, which is hardly news to a military that’s already suffered more than 2,800 killed and 22,000 wounded; a military so ground down that it won’t be able to man the next annual deployments without once again reaching out and activating thousands of Army National Guard and Reserve troops that have maxed out their active duty availability…

The White House Office of Management and Budget rejected Army chief Gen. Peter J. Schoomaker’s extraordinary plea for the additional funds to pay for repairing and replacing thousands of worn out and blown up tanks, Bradley fighting vehicles and Humvees.

Instead of the $25 billion that Schoomaker says the Army needs just to keep doing what it’s been doing with spit, adhesive tape and baling wire for the last five years, the Pentagon says the Army can have $7 billion.

This unseemly circus and its clowns in Congress can’t go away fast enough and with enough dishonor and disgrace to suit the circumstances. Their place in America’s history is secure: They will go down as the worst administration and the worst Congress we’ve ever had. Period.

They deserve to lose both the House and the Senate on Nov. 7, and the White House in 2008. They bullied their way into a war that they thought would be a slam-dunk and then so bungled things that the only superpower left in the world has been humbled and hobbled in a world that they’ve made more dangerous for us.

Thanks, guys. You’ve done a heckuva job. We won’t forget it.

  1. I am a baby boomer in the truest sense of the term – born in 1948 – I grew up watching network TV – the Big Three and PBS – there was no cable – no 200 or 300 stations to choose from so programing was limited. The point is – the standard fare was movies that had aged considerably – and as a result I watched a lot of “propaganda” films from WWII. This was the stuff that helped form my opinion of America – and what it was to be an American. Does anybody remember those films or am I the only one. Doesn’t anyone remember how barbaric it was the way the Nazis and their allies would torture their prisoners – and how our brave soldiers would offer only name, rank, and serial number. Even as a kid you knew there was a Geneva Convention – you might be a little foggy on the details – but you knew for certain that the good guys followed it – and the bad guys made up their own rules. When the movie was winding down and the bad guys had been defeated – or their defeat was eminent and sure if we would just buy some more war bonds – many times there would be a closing shot of the Bill of Rights while The Star Spangled Banner was playing – or at least a reminder of some of the values that the fallen had died to defend – among those – freedom of religion – freedom of speech – and the right to due process – speedy trials and all that. In some Orwellian flip flop all of a sudden torturing prisoners is as American as apple pie – a no brainer I’ve heard it said – You can have your freedom of religion – but as soon as we get just a few more Congressmen sewed up – we’ll have everybody’s school kids reciting good Christian prayers – the way it outta be – or at least sitting quietly while the moral majority singles your kids out and forces them to listen to their prayers – be they Catholic, Baptist, or Mormon – lets hope your brand is the chosen one. You can have your freedom of speach so long as you agree with the President – if you complain or disagree, that of course is treason – and if you happen to be a journalist – you might find your ass in jail with no real charge and only hopes for a trial at some point in the distant future. There’s not much need right now to imprison the common man who disagrees because he doesn’t have much voice – but if this imprisonment of the journalists goes over – we’ll see if we can’t just throw anybody who disagrees in jail with no charge and no trial – oh yeah – I forgot – we can already do that – we just don’t – yet.
When the Cold War was being fought we learned that the Russians were trying to end all our freedoms – so of course they were the new enemy – and I’m thinking in large part rightly so – but as evil as their empire was – it seems that they were pretty upfront about their policy on such stuff – they felt that the Government and its survival superceeded the rights of the individual whose rights needed to be abridged or denied in order to sustain the Republican — no I meant to say – the Communist party. At least they were honest about their skulldugerey. The end justifies the means and all that.
So in the years that I’ve been around – America has had some pretty substantial attacks on our freedoms and ideals from Nazi Germany – the Soviet Union – and Islamic Terrorists. And what is the terrorist technique – that of course is the manipulation of our fears – if you don’t agree with our point of view we will blow you up indiscriminately – men, women, children, civillians or combatants – it just doesn’t matter. If you publish cartoons about our religion we will kll you – if you are Jewish – we will kill you – if you are not Muslim – we will kill you.
Well Dubya has honed the ideas of the fascists in Nazi Germany – and the Authoritarianism of the Soviet Union – and now it seems – he’s bent on teaching the American public a thing or two himself about fear – if you vote for the Democrats the terrorists will kill you – if you don’t keep my party in charge – the terrorist will kill you – I have to take away yout civil liberties – or the terrorists will kill you – when those reporters show you pictures of the war – the terrorists will kill you.
This guy and his band of thieves are the worst. ever. period.
