Chastity crusaders face a Sisyphean task…

…or what we would refer to as Reality

NEW YORK — More than nine out of 10 Americans, men and women alike, have had premarital sex, according to a new study. The high rates extend even to women born in the 1940s, challenging perceptions that people were more chaste in the past.

“This is reality-check research,” said the study’s author, Lawrence Finer. “Premarital sex is normal behavior for the vast majority of Americans, and has been for decades.”

“The data clearly show that the majority of older teens and adults have already had sex before marriage, which calls into question the federal government’s funding of abstinence-only-until-marriage programs for 12- to 29-year-olds,” Finer said.

  1. If we’re going to keep spending money on a missile shield, mars colonies, the cuba embargo, and NORAD tracking santa… well.. why NOT support abstinence only programs?
It’s not like our social fabric has been reduced to merely keeping up appearances.

  2. Well then, Americans are naughty, naughty, naughty, and the gov’mint must immediately begin spending more millions of dollars pushing abstinence. That’s the only answer.

  3. For the record, we’ve been married 20 years now and are still having fun, so all that hogwash about it rew-in-ing things is just that.

  4. And it has always been that way — go back to the original European settlers and check out how many births occurred out of wedlock, or just after wedlock.

  6. America: A dirty, dirty nation of whores.
I knew I loved this country for a reason.
Oh, and just for the record, don’t more than ten percent of the population claim to be evangelical Christians?
    Tsk, tsk, tsk…

  7. The recent big jump was the Great War (WWI). In 1920, the estimate was that 50% of all first time brides were not virgins, a big jump from before the war. They called them the Roaring 20s for a reason.
In 17th century New England the general rule was that there was no point in getting married if you weren’t going to have any children. Then, as now, there was really only one way to find out.
Any study of history will reveal that people have been having sex for quite some time now.

  8. From the article:
“However, Janice Crouse of Concerned Women for America, a conservative group which strongly supports abstinence-only education, said she was skeptical of the findings.
‘Any time I see numbers that high, I’m a little suspicious,’ she said. “The numbers are too pat.'”
I think it’s fair to say she’s the one in ten perhaps who didn’t have sex before she got married, and is expressing frustration that she missed out?

  9. “We’re such naughty Americans! We’ve been bad, all of us! We need lots more spankings! Start with me!”
    “No me!”
    “No, ME!!”
“We’ve ALL been bad, and we ALL need spankings!”
    “A spanking! A spanking!”
“You must spank her well, and after you have spanked her, you may deal with her as you like, and then, spank me.”
    “And spank me.”
    “And me.”
    ” And me.”
” Yes. Yes, you must give us all a good spanking!”
” A spanking! A spanking! There is going to be a spanking tonight!”
” And after the spanking, the oral sex.”
” The oral sex! The oral sex!”
    ” Well, I could stay a bit longer…”
