Opening Day

Hey, everyone.

Sorry I’ve been MIA lately. Things have been somewhat crazy. But these things happen.

Today, as you may know, was the first day of the 2008 Major League Baseball season. My beloved Boston Red Sox won their first game of the year in Japan. In honor of this momentous day, I present the 1946 Warner Brothers cartoon entitled “Baseball Bugs.” This short contains my very favorite quote from all of animation: “Meh, watch me paste this pathetic palooka with a powerful, paralyzing, perfect pachydermous percussion pitch.” Enjoy!

  1. Got up at 6 to see the first few innings before work. Not sure I’m gonna repeat the experience tomorrow. Sounds like the game got better after I turned it off (as usual).

  2. Last year, I went to see the Brewers play a weekend series in San Diego. Before the Sunday game – because there’e usually no batting practice on Sundays – to keep the crowd occupied during pre-game warmups, they played this cartoon in its entirety on the outfield video screen.
(It was the best part of the day; Jake Peavy shut out the Crew to complete a Padre three-game sweep.)

  3. tooooo many strikes. toooo much money. and a special sales tax for a stadium the team should pay for. fuck baseball.

  4. Game #2 is over, 5-1 Athletics.
As for the cartoon, that’s one of my favorites, but there are a number of breaches of MLB rules and physics and I can’t recommend it to the children of America. I mean, you can’t swing an entire redwood at a pitch.
