Need A Reason To Feel Good About Voting For Obama?

He writesletters to little tiny children.

Yes, I know, staff work, yes, I know, this is the job given to the speech writer nobody likes this week, I’ve watched The West Wing, I know how this works. Still:

Joyce Ben-KiKi had Aron and his classmates each send letters to a famous person as part of a language arts lesson. Ben-KiKi wrapped the exercise around well-known children’s book character “Flat Stanley,” so along with the letters, the children each tucked a Flat Stanley figure they had made into each envelope.

“I told them not to expect a letter back,” Ben-KiKi said. “I told them these people are very busy and most likely will not write back.”

The list of recipients was impressive: Yankee third basemen Alex Rodriguez; Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, Olympic gold medalist Mark Spitz; Republican presidential candidate and U.S. Sen. John McCain.

Obama was the only one to write back.

  1. A., you’re right… it’s staff work — but Obama was the only one who bothered to have a staff person do it — says a lot about him, says a lot about his staff, says a lot about what we can expect from President Obama. Thanks for sharing this — I am sending it on with my email reminders to VOTE.

  2. most of it might be staff, but i do think obama put some of his own in it. i bet he was tickled by the letter and flat stanley.

  3. It was a THREE PAGE response, including details about what Flat Stanley and he did together.
Okay, that does it for me, definitely. I don’t care if it was a staff person or not. Doesn’t McCain have staff?

  4. Once again, Obama shows himself to be a classy individual.
I don’t get the Flat Stanley bit, though.

  5. That one really brought back some memories. When my girls were little my sister in law, a teacher, handed us a letter someone in her class received from another school across the country, with flat Stanley in it. We took our girls all over San Francisco, photographing them with Flat Stanley, then sent the travelogue back to the original sender. That was a riot of fun for all of us.
Barrack Obama is really just one of us. Watch his obvious enjoyment of his children, his sense of humor, his interest when people talk to him. We are about to get a real live normal human being as President! Man, what a high!!!
