Quasimodo-n-Esmeralda

A dramatic story that gives me an excuse to do myCharles Laughton as Quasimodo shtick but, alas, you can’t hear it. Not even you, Esmeralda.

Seriously, give this man asylum:

A Saudi Arabian diplomat is seeking political asylum in theUnited States because he is gay and befriended a Jewish woman, and fears for his life if he returns, NBC News reported Saturday.

The diplomat, which NBC identified as Ali Ahmad Asseri, the first secretary of the Saudi consulate inLos Angeles,
reportedly told US federal officials that Saudi officials refused to
renew his diplomatic passport and terminated his job after they
discovered that he was gay and was close friends with a Jewish woman.

“My life is in a great danger here and if I go back toSaudi Arabia, they will kill me openly in broad daylight,” Asseri told NBC in an email message.

Butbutbut. . .they’re ourallies! The US just made a $60-billion arms deal with them. Shurely there’s no human rights problem in Saudi Arabia.

Wow, man…I can’t believe a Jewish broad like myself could have that much power over someone else’s life just by close association. I am kryptonite, y’all.

My first thought is similar to Makartos.
When are we going to stop determining human rights problems according to who we want to build a military base for us?

It’s amazing how damaging it can be to a good man’s reputation when he is found to have known a Jewish woman. I guess some things are just beyond the pale for Saudis. (I assumed all Saudi men were gay, so I know that isn’t the problem.)

And some things are even beyond the veil…
