Yeah, I know there have been lots of detours lately, so sue me. Since my team is in the World Series, here’s a tribute to the greatest Giant of them all:
Spouse grew up in SF, his dad a sports writer, so you’re not alone in your Say Hey Kid enthusiasm. Best Christmas gift I ever gave him was an autographed photo of that remarkable over-the-shoulder catch Willie made.
Geez, the Lee Greene book is one I remember reading as a child. And…was happy to see the Giants take Game 1 last night.
As for Willie, in retrospect it must have been rough times, but I once saw him “play” in an exhibition game in Norfolk Virginia as a New York Met — he batted leadoff and on a 3-0 count put one over the center field fence, and was it for the night…can’t complain, he did what we wanted to see.
On the other hand, he ignored my as-polite-as-a-eight-year-old-can-be request for an autograph. Oh well.
@joanie: What’s your father in law’s name. Might be familiar with his work.
@Michael: Willie got kind of surly as an older player so I’m not surprised to hear that.
It was such a thrill to see him play. Nice human being, too.
One of my college roommates was such a Giants fan he sent Willie Mays birthday cards as a kid.
