Weekend Question Thread

Are you a member of any of your local museums or historical societies or zoos or anything?

Kick got a membership to the local aquarium for Christmas, because she’s obsessed with my father’s fish tank and the one time I took her to the Shedd she was absolutely fascinated. Think we’re gonna spend some of these upcoming chilly days inside watching jellyfish and seahorses.

  1. member of the Shedd and the Chicago History Museum. also volunteer at each. if you come to the Shedd on a Thursday morning, or the CHM on a Monday morning, let me know.
p.s. can’t watch the big Jellies exhibit any more. it closed last weekend. watch for a new exhibit coming soon.

  2. Over the years I’ve held memberships at all of the local museums and such, but at the moment I don’t have any. Our museums are small and I feel that my family has either outgrown membership or we have just exhausted our experience.

  3. Museums here are also either small or don’t offer memberships…though, to it’s credit, the State History Museum, a short walk from here, has free admission.

Love the Shedd Aquarium, mellowjohn. Obviously it’s a ways from here, but went there at least three times I can remember in the 1990s. Even saw the old tarpon that had been there since it opened…also recall when the salt water exhibit was new.

  4. Longtime member of the Desert Botanical Garden, and also volunteer at the Boyce-Thompson Arboretum, which repays the effort with a gift membership. Not that I’m much of a plant guy; both places are also excellent for photography of unrestrained, but accommodating, wildlife.
