This 1959 album was composer and bassist Charles Mingus’ first for Columbia Records. I’ve had Mingus on my mind since reading the NYT obit about his wife Sue who died recently at the age of 92. She kept Charlie’s memory alive after his death in 1979.

One of the first jazz albums that I bought, although not until around 1963.
The year 1959 also provide us with Miles Davis’s *Kind of Blue* and the Dave Brubeck Quartet’s *Time Out,* which makes that pretty great 12-month span. It’s also the year I was born. Coincidence? I think not.
