I realize that it’s Friday, Friday not Monday, Monday, but I felt like sharing some sunny California pop.
Monday, Monday was written by John Phillips in 1965. It was released in 1966 and became a monster hit. It went to the top of the Billboard charts.
We begin with the Mamas and the Papas original. Denny Doherty handled the lead vocals.
Next up, a faithful version by Marianne Faithfull:
Patti Austin recorded the Papa John classic in 1991:
Let’s go Under The Covers with Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs.
One member of Wilson Phillips is related to two of the Mamas and the Papas. She’s the blonde in the middle of the Wilson sandwich.
What would the Friday Cocktail Hour be without instrumental versions of the week’s tune? This time, Herbie Mann followed by Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass, and the Benny Goodman Sextet.
That’s it for this week. I propose a toast to Monday, Monday on Good Friday. It’s what Alice, The March Hare, The Doormouse, and The Mad Hatter would want. Never argue with them.
Welcome, let’s make a better world 🌹
