In 1991, Louisiana voters dealt with what was universally called the election from hell: a gubernatorial runoff between Edwin Edwards and David Duke. It was The Crook against The Klansman. The Gambler against the Nazi.
The race pitted a genial corrupt politician whose idea of fun was playing craps in Las Vegas against a man who, to this day, celebrates Adolf Hitler’s birthday every year.
The choice in 1991 was clear as stated in this bumper sticker that several people of my acquaintance took credit for:
The Advocate ran a story in 2021 giving credit for the bumper sticker to a guy named Kirby Newberger but the provenance seems shaky to me. Uh oh, I sound like an appraiser on Antiques Roadshow or some such shit.
In 2024, it’s just as important to VOTE AGAINST THE CROOK.
I’m going to be beating this drum every week until election day. Each post will contain a reason to vote against Trump. I realize I’m preaching to the choir but just in case there are a few odd potential 3rd party voters I’ll be in your face until Tuesday November 5, 2024.
The first reason to VOTE AGAINST THE CROOK: He’s a serial rapist, sexual assaulter, and hardcore misogynist.
