The Trump takeover of the Republican Party is something that so many in the elite media are struggling to handle, eight years after he became the nominee.
The conundrum is that they want to appear unbiased. But the problem is, that not appearing to take a side is a huge issue for the media in a time when one side is saying and doing horrible things. Often they will go to such extremes, that they will take some very strange steps to pretend that things are not what they are. One example is “We can distract from the story with labels like fascists or Nazis so we can never called fascists and Nazis what they are.” Such as a New York Times reporter telling writer Jeff Sharlet, who has logged thousands of hours researching the far right including people who live around him, that he is silly and doesn’t understand how to cover the far right. All because he dares to refer to them by what they are, fascists.
But perhaps the best example of They Still Don’t Get It is the hiring of Ronna McDaniel, the former chair of the Republican National Committee. Once upon a time, you could easily defend this as including all voices. However, the reason people are so upset with this hire is not just that she is a Republican, but what she has said and done.
That said and done was being on the phone constantly with Trump during the January 6 riots and being at Trump’s beck and call during an insurrection, and continuing to spread lies about the 2020 election over and over and over again ever since. Her lame attempt at a mea culpa (saying on Meet the Press that Biden won “fair and square”) smacks of opportunism; when she was a shill for Trump she sure seemed to be quite loud about how it wasn’t fair.
As we have seen over the last several days, a revolt on MSNBC and even NBC took shape quite fast. When you lose Chuck Todd, you know your corporate media leadership went too far. On Monday, the parade of revolters started off with Morning Joe, then went all the way up to Lawrence O’Donnell. To quote Rachel Maddow:
“And so I want to associate myself with all my colleagues at MSNBC and NBC News who have voiced loud and principled objections to our company for putting on the payroll someone who hasn’t just attacked us as journalists, but someone who is part of an ongoing project to get rid of our system of government. Someone who is still trying to convince Americans that this election stuff doesn’t really work. That this last election wasn’t a real result. That American elections are fraudulent.“
If I had to guess, I would imagine at some point McDaniel is let go, there is some sort of attempt at saving face by NBC News, and then she lands a gig at Fox News. I imagine she will spend a lot of time on Fox whining about being canceled by the mean libs and about how that is the real problem. Some squishy columnist like David Brooks or Ross Douthat over at the New York Times will write 900 words or so about how it is time for reflection by us sillies on the left about censorship for being mean to poor Ronna.
But in the end, I hope NBC learned something from this. We shall see.
The last word goes to Kacey Musgraves.

Well, she’s gone already…
