I wish people with whom I agree would stop thinking about the GOP’s Trumpist majority. They defy rational explanation because they’re Lost Souls.
Who else but a Lost Soul would stand atop a gallows outside the Capitol?
The attempt to explain Trump voters has led to a gazillion stories about Trumpers in diners. It’s a waste of time: they’re Lost Souls.
The mere consideration of the Lost Souls leads otherwise sensible people like the Morning Memo Man to draw skewed conclusions:
A couple of new polls are out on whether Trump’s conviction has had an impact on public opinion. The NYT re-surveyed some of its past respondents and found an infinitesimal move in Biden’s direction. But a new YouGov poll this week provides perhaps a clearer answer: The percentage of Republicans who say a convicted felon should not be president has plummeted from 58 percent in April to 23 percent now. So … there ya go.
I hope David Kurtz didn’t believe that earlier poll for several reasons. First, the polls have been wrong for most of the 21st Century. Second, taking that 58% seriously was ridiculous and has led Kurtz to pooh-pooh the 23%, which is a substantial number that tracks the Nikki Haley protest vote in many Republican primaries. I still don’t care about the Trumpers: they’re Lost Souls.
Another reason I wish folks on our side would stop giving a shit what Trumpers think is that it forces me to ponder polls. Repeat after me: I hate writing about polls. I don’t even like to write posts that unskew polls: That’s too much like disappointed 2012 Romney voters who refused to believe Willard had lost. Many of those people are surely Lost Souls twelve years later. The Mittbot is out of the game.
As a human being, I hope some of the Lost Souls will eventually come to their senses but I’m not holding my breath. Drinking the Trumpist Kool-Aid is a lethal addiction that dumbs down everyone who takes a sip. It makes them Lost Souls.
The last word goes to Blondie:

That photo confirms what I’ve been saying since Jan 2021: the gallows was TOO SHORT to hang anyone but a kid, and the “noose” was wrapped around a drink can.
Incompetent.
Yesterday I had to drive to Mount Kisco NY via routes that Google suggested. The last two legs of the route was a horrible drive. Three lanes , 18 wheelers and speeding weavers. On the way back I chose the Taconic Parkway which was a balm. Up in Westchester-Putnam County I spotted a sign for Donald J Trump Park. I guess he wanted to build a gold course but was turned by the locals.
