How did I spend much of my Independence Day? Watching British election results on my computer. I used to watch them on CSPAN, but if they showed the results, I couldn’t find them. The good news is that I watched them live at the BBC’s website for the first time. The Beeb is the gold standard for election coverage: they have more bells and whistles than a calliope.
One of the wonders of the British electoral system is that Labour leader Keir Starmer is already Prime Minister after meeting with King Charles:

The results were never in doubt as you can see from these charts stolen from The Guardian:

The Guardian is chart happy, if you are too click here for more.
This struck me as the perfect time to revive Athenae’s Not Everything Sucks shtick. We certainly needed some good political news and if we have to cross the pond to find it, so be it.
Best of luck to Keir Starmer’s new Labour government. Here’s hoping some of Labour’s good fortune rubs off on their American sister party and that Democrats will call off the circular firing squad that’s been forming for the last 8 days. Is that all? It feels like 8 months.
Let’s close on an optimistic note. The last word goes to The Kinks:
Repeat after me: Not Everything Sucks.
