The only thing that’s permanent about our politics is its impermanence. There are pundits who claim we’ll never have another landslide presidential victory. They could be right but ponder this: California was carried by the Republicans 9 out of 10 elections from 1952-1988. They’ve never won the state since.
Nothing lasts forever.
West Virginia used to be such a blue state that even landslide losers Carter and Dukakis carried it. The last Democrat to win there was Bill Clinton in 1996. It now seems permanently red, but is it?
Nothing lasts forever.
Reading my colleague Jamie O’s posts about life in battleground state Pennsylvania has made me nostalgic. The Gret Stet of Louisiana was a swing state in 1992 and 1996, carried twice by Bill Clinton. The Perot factor was the main reason, but it was fun to see the candidates in New Orleans. The Clintons and Gores even held a rally here after a debate with Poppy and Perot. Louisiana is now considered a permanently red state, but are we?
Nothing lasts forever.
The best example of political impermanence is the Republican party. It’s now the party that winks at Russian aggression and plans to destroy the most successful military alliance in history, NATO.
The GOP is also the party whose 3-time nominee is an Insult Comedian with a dead nutria pelt atop his head. If anything is a sign of the impermanence of our politics, that’s it.
Repeat after me: Nothing lasts forever.
I’m on the record as hating polls and their pernicious impact on our politics but a shocking Iowa poll by a respected pollster got my attention:
Seltzer poll: Harris 47, Trump 44 in Iowa https://t.co/ly7ERGpvEB

Do I think Kamala will win Iowa? No. But it’s a sign that something’s happening.

It’s reproductive freedom, stupid.
This Iowa poll is not just an outlier, it’s an indicator that another shift is coming. Kamala is doing surprisingly well in Ohio too. She’s unlikely to win it BUT she’s doing better than Biden in 2020.
Something’s happening.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Trump is closing worse than any previous candidate in my lifetime. I’ve been paying close attention since 1972. None of the losing candidates has melted down this badly, not even the Kaiser of Chaos in 2020.
Something’s happening.
The overt racism of the Trump cult has led to shit like this:
Not a SINGLE member of the Mount Pleasant PA Volunteer Fire Department – in charge of the parade – had the balls to step in & say "No"??
That's "Harris" in chains behind a golf cart with a guy in a Trump mask, surrounded by "secret service agents", a sniper gun, & campaign sign pic.twitter.com/WNVGqlK0P8

A Black woman in chains? Really? Firefighters are supposed to be heroes and role models. Presidents are also supposed to be role models. The Insult Comedian is only a role model for thugs, perverts, and rapists.
Speaking of perverts, the dread Michael Wolff is back with some recordings of Jeffrey Epstein. The pervert’s pervert claimed that Trump was his best friend, yadda, yadda, yadda. To say that Epstein has little, or no credibility is an understatement. Could it be true? Yes, but I don’t care. Wolff isn’t exactly a paragon of credibility either: He sat on these tapes since 2017.
The pollsters are about to be proven wrong again. The philosophy of their modeling can be summed up thusly: No Trumper left behind. They missed the secret Trump vote in 2016, they’ve overcompensated ever since. In 2024, the secret vote is going to the Veep as are the late deciders.
We’re about to elect our first woman president. The only question is how large the margin will be. Team Harris is trying to run up the score, that’s the reason for the appeal to Republicans. Anti-autocracy coalitions have succeeded recently in Poland and France. Why not America?
Repeat after me: It’s reproductive freedom and democracy, stupid.
Something’s happening.
The last word goes to Peter Frampton:

As a 68 year old life-long resident of the Mountain State of West Virginia I can say with certainty that my sainted Mother was correct in advising “Never say never.”
Yeah, you right, Walt.
