Once upon a time, in America, we settled on some things as a society. Sure, there were fringe-y folks who wanted to deny that we had, that there was still some debate, but they were generally considered the weirdest guy at the diner counter and relegated to out-there Internet forums like 4Chan.
These are basic ideals, and ways most Americans viewed the nation and the world.
Canada is our BFF and close ally.
So is Denmark, and we never really think much about Greenland.
All presidents after FDR get two terms, that’s it, then they went off to retire to a ranch or write a book or give speeches for money.
NATO is good and not a scam and we need it to keep Putin in check, who is not really our friend.
Due process is an extremely important part of our democracy.
Oh, and speaking of democracy, democracy is a good thing.
These are now being questioned by the Rotting Semi-Sentinent Carrot and his minions, so now you have people who have no idea where Greenland is on a map supporting an attack on Greenland to annex it. If you think Greenland is excited about becoming part of the United States, well, the Trump administration was forced to go door-to-door like Mormons to find someone, anyone, who was interested in meeting the Vances during their visit last week.
In any event, two of these things that we all assumed were settled crossed my radar this weekend. So, remember when Trump was talking about running for a third term and everyone said lol what a joker?
Turns out he wasn’t joking. On Sunday he told Milquetoast Meet the Press Host Kristin Welker as much.
The temptation with this stuff is to claim that Trump is merely “creating a distraction” to do something worse. The problem with that is Trump’s distractions are distractions in the same way throwing a hand grenade in a crowded school bus is a distraction. The worrying thing about Trump’s claims and alleged strategy, have JD Vance or someone else run and Trump is his running mate and then they do a bait-and-switch, is you really can’t trust this Supreme Court to come up with some Rube Goldberg explanation about why this is fine and cool.
Then on Saturday, this crossed my Bluesky feed:
Indiana Rep Spartz (R): “You violated the law, you are not entitled to due process.”Dangerously ignorant. 🇺🇸

That’s not how this works. If you are charged with a crime in the United States, you get due process. That’s part of our justice system.
People like Spartz and her supporters are not just sharing an opinion here. They are openly trying to bring down the rule of law and the American system. To enable justice for a select group of Americans (white right-wingers) and eliminate it for others.
At the rate we are going, I imagine at some point Trump will declare open hunting season on bald eagles. I probably shouldn’t give them any ideas.
The last word goes to Julie Ellinor.
