I’ve been watching Canadian election results since the Nineties; first on C-SPAN, now on YouTube. I even wrote about the 2015 and 2021 elections BUT I am not an expert on Canadian politics. I am, however, certain of one thing: In 2025, Donald Trump’s big mouth led to the defeat of the Canadian Conservative party and its populist leader, Pierre Poilievre. He was also kicked out of the saddle in his riding AKA parliamentary district.
Before the Insult Comedian began mouthing off about tariffs and annexation, the governing Liberal Party was dead in the water. The Conservatives had a 25-point lead in the polls, which evaporated after Justin Trudeau stepped aside for former central banker Mark Carney. Carney turned out to be a natural politician who led his party to a stunning albeit narrow victory. Thanks. Donald.
The Kaiser of Chaos prides himself on being a disrupter. He brought his brand of chaos to Canadian politics. It backfired. Trump is not only ignorant of American history, he had no clue that his annexation shtick would revive ancient Canadian fears of an American takeover, forcing Pierre Poilievre’s party to go from being MAGA curious to MAGA hostile. Thanks, Donald.
Canadian politics is known for its multi-party system but not in 2025. The New Democrats are to the left of the Liberals and in the recent past have received anywhere from 15 to 30% of the vote in national elections. The NDP was decimated last night receiving around 6% of the vote and a mere 7 seats as of this writing. The Francophone Bloc Québécois also lost seats as voters rushed to the two big parties because of President Pennywise’s big fat bazoo. Merci beaucoup, Donald.
Trump’s penchant for picking unnecessary fights has ensured that he’ll have a tougher adversary north of the border. Last night, Prime Minister Carney repeated his charge that Trump is trying to break Canada. Make that tried and failed to break Canada. Thanks, Donald.
In mid-March I wrote a post suggesting a theme song for Canada’s Liberal Party. I suggested a slight tweak to a Guess Who classic in which the main refrain was changed to “American Trumper stay away from me.” It happened last night. Thanks, Donald.
The last word goes to The Guess Who:

Thank goodness a bit of sanity prevailed in Canada. There aren’t enough swear words in my vocabulary – which for a foul-mouthed person like me is really saying something – to describe the depths of my loathing and contempt for Trump, as well as the rest of the GOP.
