Trump Makes Americans Less Anti-Immigrant

First things first, some reality about polls: When polls are off, like in an election, they tend not to be off by a lot. As in, much of the time it’s a single-digit error. There are a few exceptions, but still, not like people seem to think. Also, polling averages tend to be pretty accurate, and if you want to bet that if I am wrong about the error in national polling averages in the 2024 election being within the margin of error, you get to hit me in the head with a baseball bat and vice versa, well…

I’m so confident I’m takin’ practice swings, kid.

All that said, we have yet another poll that shows that Americans have become rather pro-immigrant in the first six months of the Trump administration.

About 8 in 10 Americans, 79%, say immigration is “a good thing” for the country today, an increase from 64% a year ago and a high point in the nearly 25-year trend. Only about 2 in 10 U.S. adults say immigration is a bad thing right now, down from 32% last year.

During Democratic President Joe Biden’s term in office, negative views of immigration had increased markedly, reaching a high point in the months before Trump, a Republican, took office. The new Gallup data suggests U.S. adults are returning to more pro-immigrant views that could complicate Trump’s push for sweeping deportations and other anti-immigration policies. The poll shows decreasing support for the type of mass deportations Trump has championed since before he was elected.

So all indications point to a percentage of Americans who did not get what a mass deportation would look like, despite people like me and every other person who writes for this blog begging people to get it. Now we are seeing the reality that, for whatever reason, many voters either wouldn’t or couldn’t see, which includes masked men whisking grandmas off the street and forcing them into unmarked vehicles. Seems kinda authoritarian! And also, hurting the Republicans.

So, even if say all the polling averages on immigration were 10 points off, something that would be remarkable for a national poll, that’s still a pretty solid majority. And if you read the rest of those numbers at the link, GOPers are even coming around to some extent to the idea that immigration is good.

So, Trump has kind of created a pro-immigrant America in just six months. This has all happened despite a Democratic Party that, as often is the case, fights like they are in last year’s environment. It would behoove Democratic leadership to act more like they are shapers of opinions and not just those who react, despite what the consultants say.

If Democrats message it properly, and there’s no reason why they can’t, this could very well be a winning issue in 2026, despite it being something that was used against us in 2024. And it would all be nothing but Trump’s cruelty and hatefulness that led to it.

The last word goes to some fun stuff, Lucius’ newest song, Joyride. We deserve a little joy.
