Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever

I selected this week’s tune via the back door. I’ve been playing The Band a lot since Thanksgiving and their rollicking versions of this song are the highlight of many a live album.

Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever was written in 1966 by Ivy Jo Hunter and Stevie Wonder for The Four Tops. Stevie never recorded the song but played drums on the original record.

We begin at the beginning:

Marvin Gaye. Say no more.

Let’s take a trip to the Bronx for Dion DiMucci’s take on this week tune.

Dionne Warwick recorded this song in her pre-Psychic hotline days.

Bryan Ferry is an unusual artist. He’s both a rocker and a crooner.

The Band loved playing the Hunter-Wonder classic. This version features one of Rick Danko’s finest vocals.

Finally, Susan Tedeschi in her pre-Tedeschi Trucks Band era. As far as I know, she’s not a psychic.

That’s it for this week. Let’s drink to the great Stevland Wonder. Thanks for all the great music, sir. It’s what Rick, Robbie, Richard, Levon, and Garth would have wanted. Never argue with them.
