That may be a sorry excuse for a featured image, but I wanted to combine something old with something new-ish. This week’s tune is one of the oldest songs ever featured in this space and emojis became ubiquitous this century.
Who’s Sorry Now? was written in 1923 by Ted Snyder, Bert Kahlmar, and Harry Ruby. It’s a gem of a song that’s been recorded 372 times according to the folks at Second Hand Songs.
We begin with a space age pop version by Nat King Cole and Billy May:
I haven’t seen the movie from whence this version came in eons, but I recall it as being quite good.
Next up, the soulful stylings of Jimmy Witherspoon:
Connie Francis’ 1957 version is the biggest hit of the bunch: reaching #4 in the US and #1 in the UK.
Willie Nelson. Say no more.
Finally, legendary New Orleans trumpeter Lionel Ferbos puts a trad jazz spin on this week’s tune.
What would the Friday Cocktail Hour be without instrumental versions of the week’s tune? This time, Benny Carter followed by Chet Atkins & Merle Travis.
That’s it for this week. I propose a toast to buyer’s remorse among Trump voters who *should* be sorry now. It’s what Nat and Ella would want. Never argue with them.
