Save Us From The SAVE Act

So on Tuesday afternoon Senate Majority Leader Thune gave in and started the process of putting the SAVE Act on the Senate floor. The MAGAts were all hot for a talking filibuster but let’s face it—Senate Dems are 100% up to that challenge, and Thune decided to pass on that option. The GOP-controlled Congress isn’t really about legislating right now, so I guess it makes sense for the Senate to spend a bunch of time letting Republicans hone their FOX soundbites.

The whole thing is so fucking stupid. There are very few cases of non-citizens voting. The whole thing is an argument pitched at the stupidest people in America. If you were an undocumented person trying to survive in the US, why would you go and register to vote and give all of your info to the government you are hiding from? And if all of these undocumented people voted in 2024 and elected President Grievance, then why would the GOP want to keep them from voting GOP again.

Logic is a losing proposal when you are dealing with MAGA, which I guess explains why every Republican explaining how the SAVE Act works just lies:

It’s all they can do:  lie. Lie about how many people support the SAVE Act, lie about how it’s just like using your ID to buy alcohol, and:

OK so why did I bother getting a passport if my Costco ID works just as well? The truth behind these pathetic GOP defenses is that there is no defense. There is no problem with voting because non-citizens simply don’t vote. But Democrats vote, and all of the early signs point to the possibility of an overwhelming Democratic win across the board in November, so the plan is really to make it harder for them to vote.

But because the GOP is being run by the stupidest people in the world, the secret plan actually ends up hurting Republican voters. Married women who change their names?

But the place where the GOP has really shot itself in the foot is the insistence that it’s so easy to prove you’re a citizen because you can just use your passport. OK. Since my bootlicking senator, Shelley Capito, was at the Thune press conference this afternoon, let’s look at WV as an example of how stupid this suggestion is:  only 20% of West Virginians have a passport. And while I have not done a scientific study, my anecdotal experience is that most of those people aren’t going to vote for Republicans this year.

And yet, there was Shelley, pushing this nonsense. She has a primary challenger this year, and he’s running to her right. I am not sure if he has enough name recognition from his time in the WV legislature, but she is running scared so there she was, possibly sinking her own candidacy as she doubled down as part of the crew of the GOP Titanic. Bon voyage, GOP!
