Don’t Cry For Me Argentina

So the Palantir has shown a vision and Peter Thiel has left the US:

What’s confirmed: According to The New York Times, and subsequently echoed by Newsweek, NewsNation, the Associated Press, and nearly every major outlet, Thiel has purchased a mansion in one of Buenos Aires’ most elite neighborhoods—a property reportedly around 17,200 square feet and valued at roughly $12 million. He has enrolled his children in local schools. Reports also indicate he bought land across the river in Uruguay. He has met privately more than once with Javier Milei—the libertarian, chainsaw-wielding president of Argentina. Argentina’s government is reportedly considering offering him permanent residency or citizenship—a claim Milei’s office has denied.

I’m not a conspiracy theorist or an alarmist, but I do know a rat deserting a sinking ship when I see it. And there’s some context too. Like this:

Argentina has formalized a currency swap agreement with the United States for up to $20bn aimed “at contributing to Argentina’s economic stability”, the South American country’s central bank said.

The deal is part of huge financial support from the administration of Donald Trump, a strong backer of the Argentinian president, Javier Milei, who is under pressure ahead of midterm elections on 26 October.

The peso has been fluctuating wildly ahead of the vote, disrupting the savings and spending plans of Argentinians who fear it could lose even more value in the coming weeks.

As well as the swap line, the US treasury secretary, Scott Bessent, last week announced efforts to secure a separate $20bn facility from “private banks and sovereign wealth funds” to support Argentina’s embattled economy.

Yes the larger geopolitical picture made it a move against China, but it’s no coincidence that Argentina is where bad people go to disappear.

And you don’t need a seeing stone to see what is coming. President Grievance is rapidly deteriorating before our eyes. His discolored hand was very swollen on Wednesday and his right eye was swollen almost shut. He can’t have a linear conversation. His proof of life jaunt to the cameras on Wednesday was all about his stupid chart of how long the reflecting pool is.

All signs point to a Democratic victory in November, even with the endless GOP redistricting cheating. And, I’m not counting unhatched chickens; just comparing data points. Trump is more unpopular today than he was in 2018, and there are strong signs that voters might want to return the Senate to Democratic control:

So of course he’s getting out of Dodge. All of the people whom he put into office are about to get trounced by the voters, and there is no reason to think anything is going to improve over the summer months. Why not go to a country that’s been fixed up with US money and which won’t extradite your ass back to the US to stand trial?

I read a few pieces by tech bros who are convinced that Thiel can see the future because “the data” has given him insights that the rest of us don’t have. I’d like to offer 2 counterarguments to that. First Thiel is obsessed with…the Antichrist, so already you know he’s a weirdo. And then there’s the fact he and his fellow techoligarchs are massive cowards who are of course all going to run:

Ivanka Trump attracted scrutiny this week for touting the planned luxury development on a podcast. Trump described her and Kushner being “captivated” by the island after first visiting it, and described the project to host David Senra as “the culmination of all of my experience in real estate, all of my travel, a lot of reflection on how I want to live, how I think people increasingly are wanting to live, and trying to really build something that’s a tangible manifestation of that.” Her comments have attracted ridicule from critics of the president, with “Daily Show” anchor Michael Kosta criticizing Trump as being “out of touch” and commenting, “And for those of you who are thinking, hey, before buying a private island, shouldn’t billionaires maybe read the room? What you don’t understand is, the island doesn’t have rooms yet.”

Yes, because when I think of Ivanka Trump I think of a woman who can live with ecologically safe showers, limited electricity, and low levels of consumer consumption. Oh and the extradition treaty between Albania and the US would most likely protect Javanka from prosecution. It’s so heart-warming.

Senator Ron Wyden called it:

Now we wait to see where the rest of the rats will go.

I’ll leave you with this reminder that history sometimes rhymes:
