Saturday Odds & Sods: Blue Sky

A Patch Of Blue by Rene Magritte.

It’s been a remarkable week politically. The candidate driven blue tsunami has drowned MAGA for now.  The right-wing rats are scurrying off the Bad Ship Trumpism as it sinks. Our side needs to be relentless in ensuring that MAGA stays underwater after this stinging rebuke.

All is quiet on the ratfucking front thus far. Like his political role model, Viktor Orban, the Insult Comedian’s owned and operated party lost by such a big margin that ratfucking won’t work. That was my hoped for outcome. It was realized on Tuesday.

GOP efforts to rig the election via gerrymandering also flopped. They took a beating in those districts. It warms the cockles of my heart. I still don’t know what a cockle is but I dig the expression.

In the Gret Stet of Louisiana, there’s disgruntlement among the chronically online over the senate race narrowly lost by Jamie Davis. More money is the mantra. If there had been national financial support, Republicans might have awakened from their slumber and run a campaign. A reminder that Elon Musk spent over $400 million in support of Republican candidates; much of it in Texas. It didn’t make a damn bit of difference as Democrats swept statewide offices in the Lone Star state. The same thing happened around the country as money proved less important than passion in 2026.

Louisiana Democrats should build on the Davis campaign, not try to pull defeat out of the jaws of national victory. My old publisher Lamar White Jr. thinks we should accentuate the positive, he thinks it’s a chance for party building. I concur.

The Clownfish DBA Jeff Landry got the candidate he wanted then didn’t work for her in the general election. He was too busy with vanity projects like Greenland and LSU football. Sound familiar?

Things are looking good in Scott Colom’s senate race. It’s a squeaker but it looks like I’ll be able to write a Fuck Yeah, Mississippi post soon. Fuck yeah.

This week’s theme song is dedicated to another state that flipped: Georgia. Black women won 7 of 8 statewide offices in the late election. The forecast calls for blue skies in Georgia, Georgia, Georgia.

Blue Sky was written by Dicky Betts for the Allman Brothers Band’s 1972 album, Eat A Peach.

We have 3 versions of our theme song for your listening pleasure: the studio OG, the Allman Brothers live, and Joan Baez.

In her victory speech, Georgia’s Governor-elect Keisha Lance Bottoms quoted this classic song:

We begin our second act by skipping it altogether. It still gets a last word as I’m in a celebratory mood. It goes to Todd Rundgren:

There were many victories on Tuesday, but it’s such a great song that I had to use it. Thanks, Todd.

We begin our third act with our favorite stolen feature.

Separated At Birth Casting Edition: We’re going back to the This Is Not A Murder Mystery well. It’s Max Ernst paired with the actor who played him, Mike Hoffman.

Here’s a punk rock song about Max:

Punk rock isn’t my jam but Max Ernst is.

Your Basic Basie: The Count doubles down on blue on this tune.

Have I told you lately how much I love Count Basie?

The Best Of SNL: Here’s a cold opening starring Dana Carvey as Poppy Bush.

I’d forgotten Dana-George’s mantra in that scene: Read my lips, no new huge taxes. Let’s see what the Other George has to say about that:

Classic Movie Trailer: The color blue and surrealism go together like peas and carrots. I’ve always considered David Lynch to be a surrealist at heart. Here’s the trailer for his masterpiece, Blue Velvet:

Grading Time: I give David Lynch’s Blue Velvet 4 stars and an Adrastos grade of A. It’s a stone cold classic.

Bobby Vinton is associated with the song Blue Velvet but Tony Bennett was the first to record it:

Saturday GIF Horse: I can’t get enough of the blue wave this week.

How about a wave song from XTC?

Toon Time: Mike Luckovich on the Georgia election results and Trump’s ass fixation. Oy, just oy.

Let’s close down this virtual honky tonk with some more music.

Saturday Closer: Nothing says victory like this Queen classic.

That’s all for this week. We began with Georgia, let’s finish there. The last word goes to 2 of my favorite candidates this election cycle: Keisha Lance Bottoms and Jon Ossoff.
