Fuck Shit Jesus, They Got An Army!

Gays are coming to get us again! Quick, everybody disavow them!

The court’s decision is likely to re-energize an election-year debate over same-sex marriages and gay rights. By injecting the social issue into a contest that has been dominated by the economy and Iraq, the ruling could provoke a backlash among conservatives, drawing them to the polls in large numbers.

Someone hold me.

You know, I can hear the meeting now, in which people tell Clinton and Obama (forget McCain, he’s off somewhere eating oatmeal with a straw) to be careful and be cautious and worry, worry, worry, worry because all those moral values voters seized on gay marriages in Massachusetts and San Francisco as reasons to vote Republican, so don’t look too liberal by favoring equal protection under the fucking law.Not that they need much encouragement to be chickenshit on this issue, apparently:

Both of them should be ashamed. There’s absolutely no reason they couldn’t at least have said, “Congratulations to California’s same-sex couples, who took a step forward toward equality today,” which wouldn’t even have been inconsistent with their civil union wankery. It’s just unkind to have issued such flat sentiments.

Lest the “gay marriage is going to doom the Democrats again so they’d better go out and kick the shit out of some gays to make a point” argument have time to sit there and rot and release its spores into the atmosphere, I’m gonna go back to something our former blogmate Tena wrote after the 2004 election, when the same scaredy-cats losing their little minds over gay marriage now were losing them before:

No link, just another editorial. But this is important and I must say it publicly.

I have never in my life been so disappointed in people as I am in the so-called liberals who are all over the blogosphere bashing gays and blaming them. If y’all want to be fascist appeasers, then be my guest, but you are not going to have me as a companion on your particular road to tyranny and hell.

I will never give up my principles. I will not alter my morality. I will stand with my gay and lesbian and transsexual fellow citizens to the bitter end. It is non-negotiable. I will go where they go and I will fight for them with my last breath. That’s final.

Those of you now joining the witch hunt can go to hell. Fine bunch of progressives some of you are. I cry “Shame” on all of you who are daring to blame same sex marriage for the loss of this election.

Because, fuck yeah. There are plenty of things in this world to be scared of. There are plenty of things in this world to fear. Love isn’t one of them. Fairness isn’t one of them. Equality isn’t one of them. And we are either all safe, all loved, all equal, all welcome, all protected, or none of us are. Full stop.

  1. As I posted on MPS, I would MUCH rather be financially strapped due to buying wedding gifts for my gay friends than trying to fill up my gas tank for getting to work!!!

  2. For the record, gays marrying are NOT the reason I am still single…”they” haven’t taken a man away from me. As someone has stated before – if you don’t support gay marriage – don’t get one! Jeepers flippin’ creepers – how dense ARE the conservatives?!?!?!
What I would like to see is a ban on all assholes – if you are a complete asshole and aren’t a decent human, then you won’t be allowed to date, let alone marry. Then that might lead to less heartbreak and more real folks dating for the right reasons and then getting married IF they so opt for that.
    Hmmmph!

  3. My mother, who is about as socially conservative as they come in some ways, once said, “I don’t give a flip if gay people get married. How is that hurting me? It has nothing to do with me.” Some people need a big heaping helping of IT’S NOT ABOUT YOU.

  4. There have to be some core non-negotiable principles that progressives/liberals will stand for, no matter what, without calculation. Digby has written eloquently (pardon the redundancy) about why women’s reproductive freedom is one of those principles, notwithstanding the urgings from some quarters that Democrats could gain politically by compromising on it. I could not agree more with Athenae and Tena that basic equality for gay people is another such principle. It goes to the very essence of what liberalism means, or damn well should mean. They are human beings, they are as good as anybody else, and pandering to people who irrationally hate them is pathetic and contemptible.
Even though, as a native Californian, I fear that my traditional heterosexual marriage has now been invalidated by the supreme court… Also, I suddenly can’t stop humming show tunes and cleaning up after myself, which is a good thing because all my wife wants to do now is watch WNBA games… Go figure.

  5. Commenter (Frederik)over at Politico (linked to from the Shakes post):
I personally don’t care either who do they go in bed with either, but there are some rules here which we know from the day when Adam and Eva have been born as first human beings on this planet. It was Adam and Eva and not Adam and Josh. There are no legal, no historical and definately no moral grounds to allow gay to marry and enjoy the same statuis as heterosexually couples. Their only argument is that “because they love each other”. They want children now too.
Rules, people, rules! I guess this one would be the Adam and Eva rule?
Wanna bet Frederik thinks Jesus rode dinosaurs too?

  6. What Frederik of Golllleeewood and so many OTHER of teh freepi and non-moderately-computer-literate conservatives fail to mention – if Adam and Eve(a) were the ‘original hoomans’ who officiated at their wedding ceremony? Who were their attendants? Where were they registered? Who catered the reception? And WHO ISSUED THE MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE??? If “marriage” just between man and woman was “legal” where are the legal documents or clay tablets…? I mean if it were just two men ‘teh gawd’ created because that’s all the bits ‘he’ had – would they have been considered ‘married’?
Where is the contemporary to A&E rulebook about ONLY min & wimmin hooking up at that point…??? (and A&E were before the buybull. Hell if they ‘were’ the first pipples, they didn’t even have paper yet, let alone ink and a nice writing desk to journal their days or be issued decrees about just teh dangly man bits to only go w/the hidey girly bits in accordance w/teh lawz…
NOR did they even have an education to speak of to be “lerndid” enuf to write/read said laws, keep track of them, make a spreadsheet…etc!
All things being genetically based, if teh Gawd cloned teh Adam via his riblet – surely, “Eve” was indeed “Steve”!!! (where in the hell did “josh” come from frederik? Is that your man crush over in accounting?)
Oy vey Maria!!! I need coffee!!! 🙂
Happy Saturday out there – have fun!

  7. obvy, frederik is desperately single and has no chance w/’teh ladeeze’ let alone marrying someone of their free choice (he’ll probably resort to mail-order, how romantic…NOT), so he isn’t about to be ‘okay’ w/HUMANS of any stripe being allowed to be legally bound in matrimony.
So, if ‘teh gaii’ are not ‘worthy’ enough to be considered for legal marriage, are they also “free” from other laws? (aside from gravity and motion and such physical laws)
    Teh stoopit, it burrrnss us!

  8. This is completely off-topic nitpicking for which I apologize in advance. Miss A, I love you to death, but you are a capable journalist and an author of repute. When you write “all protected, or none of us are. Full stop,” I cringe. “None” is always singular, as in “none of us is…”
This has been driving me crazy on many sites. I apologize again that I picked yours to vent on. Forgive me, please.

  9. I was in San Diego when the news broke. Listening to one of the justices say, in tears, that he just couldn’t look at his gay friends and tell them their love was any less valid than his…wow. What a lovely, lovely, wonderful moment.
It almost makes me happy to have so many transplanted Californians living in Colorado.
Srsly, any readers in California, I envy you your Supremes. And I’m delighted that your Governator says he won’t support an amendment to nullify their decision. He’s acting more like his wife’s family every day.
