Last Judgement

DearFundamentalist Christians,

It’s time for you to decide who you are. Are you going to be the kind of people who supporttorture, prisoner abuse, andextraordinary rendition? Or are you going to be followers of Christ’s message? You know, the one that embraces the idea of agape, that believes in turning the other cheek, that believes that the peacemakers are blessed, that the meek shall inherit the earth.

There’s the old adage that the Devil can quote scripture, as can those who further his agenda here on earth. If there was any doubt before, now we know that isabsolutely true. So who are you going to follow, Christ or the Devil?

Because it’s really that simple. The choice is that clear. I’m not a believer in a black-and-white world, but in this case, it’s the blackest black vs. the whitest white. And that’s even before we get into the issue of whether torture is even effective. (Cluephone! It’s for you:It’s not.)

You have a choice. What is in your heart? Because if this stuff seems okay to you, I don’t think you want to know the real answer to that question. And I wouldn’t be hoping for the Rapture if I were you…

And yes, I find it deeply amusing that I, an agnostic just one micron removed from being an atheist, am the one having to tell y’all this.

Detail of the Last Judgement, by Michelangelo. Hey, isn’t that Gary Bauer?Last Judgement Detail small(Michelangelo is, BTW, one of the things that makes me believe in a higher power, along with Mozart, Mr. BuggyQ and a few other goodies.)

  1. American Fundamentalists are, by and large, not Christians.
They are some weird, degraded, decadent offshoot, a cross between the Republican Party, the John Birch Society and the Ku Klux Klan, who dress up their fear, hatred and bigotry in religious clothes in an attempt to stifle criticism.
Everything that Jesus preached, they are against: turning the other cheek, loving your enemies, giving all your possession to the poor. As Lenny Bruce said, if he came back today, they’d crucify him again.
Only this time, it’d be on Fox and hosted by Bill O’Reilly and Rush Limbaugh.

  2. but where did he find all these muscle bound people before steroids???
the women are usually as buff. just with bigger tits, but not big ones.
jesus told us he’d be hard to follow.

  3. Was it William Blake that had those over-emphasized pictures of angels bemoaning the actions of mankind? Almost to the point of being grotesque as they reacted to us?

  4. I love how evangelical “ethicist” Keith Pavlischek in the article notes that Christianity’s “just war tradition” allows the good guys to do rough stuff in order to protect the innocent (apparently, it’s protects the innocent to seek coerced false intelligence retroactively justifying the Iraq invasion). You know what else “just war tradition” notes, Keith? That invading a country that isn’t threatening you under false pretenses isn’t a just war.
I was mildly pleasantly surprised that Richard Land of the Southern Baptist Convention has declared waterboarding torture, and made a “slippery slope” argument that doesn’t involve gay marriage for a change. Maybe we can put him in a cage with Gary Bauer. Thunderdome!
