Sotomayor for Supreme Court

WASHINGTON –President Barack Obama tapped federal appeals judgeSonia Sotomayor for theSupreme Court on Tuesday, officials said, making her the first Hispanic in history picked to wear the robes of a justice.

If confirmed by the Senate, Sotomayor, 54, would succeed retiringJustice David Souter. Two officials described Obama’s decision on condition of anonymity because no formal announcement had been made.

officials say Sotomayor would bring more judicial experience to the
Supreme Court than any justice confirmed in the past 70 years.

A formal announcement was expected at midmorning.

had said publicly he wanted a justice who combined intellect and
empathy — the ability to understand the troubles of everyday Americans.

Democrats hold a large majority in the Senate, and barring the unexpected, Sotomayor’s confirmation should be assured.

  1. Disappointing choice; she’s way too conservative. But then that’s the story of Obama’s presidency: give everything to the right wing that they want, and the left gets shit in its face.

  2. john paul stevens. she may turn out to be a flaming liberal on the bench. but the rite will be stymied. and boy, it certainly looks FAIRER than georgee’s rite winger picks. this will only give obama a boost at making the rite look like shit and 2010 is looking good. if we get fresh democrat blood.

  3. A Latina.
You want somebody who won’t get shouted down behind closed doors in The Chambers.
