Ronaldus Magnus was also good…at being knee-jerk, reflexively anti-librul, which the base still can’t get enough of. How that might have worked out in light of recent history is of course an open question, but…it’s not like your base GOPers are particularly deep thinkers–or even logically coherent–when it comes to matters of public policy.
Just my opinion, but Raygun’s appeal to them back in the day, and Trump’s appeal to them now…is pretty similar: see hippie, punch hippie. The fact that over time their economic condition has gotten worse, well, less important to them than the psychic satisfaction of hating “the other,” and, if at all possible, putting them in their place…
