The Democrats have been not afraid to call the TFG a convicted felon, and that is a welcome relief. Even Joe Biden got in on it, which is great.
“Folks, the campaign entered uncharted territory last week,” Biden said at a fundraiser in Greenwich, Connecticut, according to a White House pool reporter. “For the first time in American history, a former president that is a convicted felon is now seeking the office of the presidency.”
But Biden has to do more—he has to tell TFG to step down as the presumptive nominee.
There is solid popular support for TFG to do so, too:
By the numbers: 54% of registered voters “strongly” or “somewhat” approve of the guilty verdict compared to 34% who “strongly or “somewhat” disapprove.
-
- 49% of Independents and 15% of Republicans said Trump should end his campaign because of the conviction.
It’s a win-win for the Biden campaign and for the country.
Others have suggested it too, but their rationale is heavily based on the assumption that anyone in the GOP can be reached with logic or reason:
It seemed to me that somebody would tell Trump to walk away. After all, chin-stroking pundits and hand-wringing Democrats have been advising President Biden to step aside — for the apparently unforgivable crime of living to 81.
Or from the right side of the aisle:
Trump still has the opportunity to commit an uncharacteristically decent act and spare America from having a felon on the ballot. To refuse to step aside–in favor of someone who shares his policy positions but not his criminal record–would further reveal Trump is far more interested in his personal ambitions than his policy positions.
EVERYBODY! STOP THIS NONSENSE!
I mean, first there is zero chance TFG is going to drop out. The idea that this sulking pile of stinking resentment is suddenly going to commit a decent act is the saddest wishful thinking I have seen in a long time. This guy and his dad conspired to keep from having to rent to Black people. He led a virtual lynch mob against the Central Park 5. He raped his first wife. He raped E. Jean Carroll. He raped Stormy Daniels. He sexually assaulted at least 30 other women. He led an insurrection. He stole classified documents.
Yeah, he’s totally going to step down and face all of the music he’s lined up for himself.
And LOL at the idea that someone in the GOP is going to walk up to that bellowing blowhard and speak truth to him. TFG would rather take down the entire GOP than to step aside to keep the party going. And anyway, it wouldn’t help because if TFG were pushed out, the party would collapse from infighting.
On the other hand, TFG is a convicted felon. That’s not going to be an asset when the campaign season starts in earnest after Labor Day. He may even be in jail, or on house arrest, or on probation. None of those things are going to be great photo ops for him.
All of this means that Joe Biden should go on the offensive and make sure we’re all asking the question: how could the GOP seriously run a convicted felon as their standard bearer?
And then let the GOP have to answer it for months.
Here’s a fun version of the lesson TFG just learned:
