Musical Interlude: Take Me To Church

I love to sing, and I sing in my church’s choir. We gather in the choir loft even when our “official” season is over (Trinity Sunday for you church calendar people). So a church-themed Musical Interlude seemed appropriate.

I’ll start with the obvious one:

I have heard this song and it’s OK. It’s the first one a lot of us probably thought of and so I wanted to get it out of the way. It’s not quite right for my theme, but there it is anyway.

This is the song that inspired this post:

I love Lyle Lovett. I never missed seeing him live when I lived in Boston and DC. Just a fantastically talented singer

Here’s a less humorous take on religion:

This one is one I had forgotten about:

And that reminds me of:

You know what? I totally get those last 2 songs.

Here’s a related one:

I don’t like God’s chances on a bus these days.

One more before the key change:

I don’t find a lot of South Park funny, but there are a few episodes in the first few seasons that still make me laugh out loud. That’s one of them.

A few more songs as I shift the focus to pop songs that are either about Bible stories or whose lyrics come from the Bible or hymns.

I was quite surprised the first time I found this as the opening hymn in an Episcopal church:

Here’s the hymn version:

I think this is most famous scripture-based pop song:

Straight from Ecclesiastes.

I’ll close with one of my all time favorites, with its lyrics from Psalms 19 and 137. If you’re not a church person, you can at least have some Sunday supper later.
