“Make Them Riot”

The Dipshit Insurrection is coming back to haunt the Insult Comedian and his campaign. Judge Chutkan has unsealed Jack Smith’s 160 page filing addressing the Supreme Court’s fakakta immunity ruling. It forces those who would prefer to avert their eyes to ponder the events of 1/6/2021. That’s a good thing politically: everyone but hardcore Trumpers knows that what happened that day was wrong as well as downright un-American.

The filing is heavily redacted with codes in lieu of names with the exception of Trump who is called defendant and Mike Pence who is referred to by name. Pence is the star of the document. He did not testify before the J6 Committee but appeared before Smith’s grand jury. His testimony is devastating. It confirms the public testimony of his aides as well as the account published by Woodward and Costa in Peril. That was reporting, this is evidence.

Direct evidence is the best evidence, and the Smith filing is groaning with it. It shows that Steve Bannon was more involved in the planning of the coup than previously thought; no wonder he preferred to do a brief stint in the slammer than to be grilled by the unlikely team of Liz Cheney and Jamie Raskin.

Rudy Giuliani is coded as CC1: Co-conspirator 1. His imprint is over all aspects of the coup plot. He ran the pressure campaign trying to force GOP officeholders to go along with the fake electors scheme. He’s a weak man pretending to be a tough guy who has gone from RICO prosecutor to RICO defendant.

At every stage of the conspiracy, Trump was involved. We’ve all heard his “perfect phone call” with Brad Raffensperger but it was not an isolated incident. He lobbied then Arizona Governor Doug Ducey just as hard. Ducey refused to go along with the fake electors scheme, which was abandoned in favor of the attempted coup on January 6. Trump was the coup leader, not a guilty bystander.

The post title comes from a bone chilling passage early in Smith’s motion. A Trump campaign aide said “make them riot” after being reminded of the 2000 Brooks Brothers riot staged in support of the Bush-Cheney campaign in Florida. That was a Roger Stone production.

Team Smith’s motion reaffirms that the Defendant Trump knew he had lost the election and reacted with depraved indifference to the fate of his Veep. When told that Pence was in danger, Trump said, “So what?”

Another awful quote comes from Pence’s testimony about his meetings with his then boss. He was told he was “too honest.” That’s Trump’s idea of an insult. Sounds like a compliment to me. Of course, I’m not a convicted felon facing charges in multiple jurisdictions.

I’ve read the entire motion. I skimmed parts but paid careful attention to the Pence portions. Mike Pence tried to talk Trump off the coup ledge with flattery but when that didn’t work, he stood firm. Pence’s reward for 4 years of subservient loyalty was to be cast adrift and thrown to the mob of feral Trumpers. Trump associates beware: It could happen to you too. He only cares about himself.

The motion was necessitated by the infamous ruling in the immunity case. Team Smith’s task was to rebut the presumption of immunity laid down in Roberts’ opinion. Their arguments are strong, but facts don’t matter to SCOTUS in this case. The highest court in the land has become Trump’s tool, so I’m skeptical that Smith’s arguments will work with them. SCOTUS has gone all in on MAGA corruption. I never thought I’d say this: John Roberts makes Warren Burger look masterful.

The political impact of the filing is unclear. BUT the last thing Team Trump wants to talk about is the candidate’s role in the Dipshit Insurrection. His team knows that the people who will decide the election are embarrassed and appalled by what happened on that day. Not all past Trump voters have swilled down the BIG LIE Kool-Aid. I believe that there are enough of them to defeat Trump and allow the cases against him to proceed next year.

I may have more to say about the Smith filing in the coming weeks: I haven’t gotten my marching orders from The Puppetmaster’s podcast yet.

Repeat after me: Vote against the crook, it’s important.
