By Friday Cocktail Hour standards, Don’t Dream It’s Over is a recent song. In fact, it’s the first song from the 1980’s that I’ve posted on the FCH. This feature, uh, features songs that have stood the test of time.
Neil Finn wrote Don’t Dream It’s Over in 1986 for Crowded House’s eponymous debut album. It was a hit at the time, now it’s a classic. Shorter Adrastos: Neil Finn nailed it.
Don’t Dream It’s Over is a wistful song. It perfectly fits my post-election mood: I’m trying to be wistful instead of angry. It’s a struggle but I’m getting there.
We begin with two versions by Crowded House: the OG video and a 2022 live version with what is best described as the family band edition of Crowded House since Neil’s sons Liam and Elroy have joined the group.
Paul Young had a hit with this week’s tune in 1991.
FCH regular Diana Krall is back with her take on this Finny classic.
Next up, a fine version from a band with a swell name, Sixpence None The Richer:
A reggae version from Stanryck, not to be confused with Barbara Stanwyck, which wasn’t her real moniker in any case. I prefer her birth name, Ruby Stevens.
Paul Carrack. Say no more.
Finally, a 2019 cover by my 13th Ward neighbor, Deacon John Moore.
What would the Friday Cocktail Hour be without an instrumental version of the week’s tune? This time, Stringspace String Quartet:
That’s it for this week. Let’s toast Neil Finn. Thanks for all the great music. It’s what the late, great Crowded House drummer Paul Hester would want. Never argue with him.
