Everyday I Have The Blues

This week’s song title sums up the feelings of many of us. It’s okay as long as we don’t let the blues defeat us everyday and in every way.

There’s a debate as to who wrote this song. I don’t have a horse in this race. Suffice it to say that Pinetop Sparks wrote Everyday I Have The Blues in 1935. 13 years later, Memphis Slim modified the song and recorded it as Nobody Love Me. How bluesy is that?

I’m not wading into the fray, so we begin with the most famous version of this week’s tune by BB King:

Joe Williams and Count Basie. Say no more.

This version could be called Sassy sings the blues if you’re so inclined.

I really dig this interpretation by Chicago blues legends Buddy Guy and Junior Wells.

Finally, Natalie Cole whose family nickname was Cookie sings a sweet version of the Pinetop-Slim classic.

What would the Friday Cocktail Hour be without an instrumental version of the week’s tune? This time, Kenny Burrell.

That’s it for this week. I propose a toast to all the blues musicians out there keeping the genre alive. It’s what Leonard Chess, Howlin’ Wolf, Willie Dixon, and Sonny Boy Williamson would want. Never argue with them.
