Maybe I’m Amazed

The featured image is Paul McCartney with a cocktail shaker. Maybe I’m Amazed isn’t the booziest Macca song but it’s among the best numbers from his early days as a solo artist. He took a beating from the rock media over the Beatles’ breakup and the preposterous rumor that he was dead. This song was a way for Macca to strike backa.

Paul McCartney wrote Maybe I’m Amazed in 1970 for his eponymous debut album. He played all the instruments too. For all we know, he did the cooking, joint rolling, and cocktail shaking. Paul is a talented guy.

We begin with the songwriter:

Faces nearly topped the Macca OG with this live version:

Petula Clark stopped sleeping in the subway and recorded this song:

Lena Horne may strike you as an odd singer to cover McCartney. I had the same thought, but her version is a soulful triumph.

Joe Cocker. Say no more with a raspy voice.

I played the album from whence this Macca cover came for the first time after hearing this. It’s terrific.

Finally, a 21st Century performance of this week’s tune by the songsmith.

What would the Friday Cocktail Hour be without instrumental versions of the week’s tune? This time, Tom Scott followed by the Vitamin String Quartet. I am not making that band name up.

That’s it for this week. I propose a toast to the Resistance. Vive les Maquis. It’s what Victor Laszlo would want. Never argue with a hero.
