The contract with America, 10 years later

No birthday cake for the contract with America’s 10th birthday; in fact, the Republicans seem intent on ignoring it. And no damned wonder.
I’m sure y’all remember Newt Gingrich’s creation, so let’s take a quick look what has been happening. Despite a law curbing unfunded mandates, Bush’s No Child Left Behind education law is just one of several federal requirements the Bush administration has made on states that the states must finance.
And whatever happend to fiscal responsibility by the federal government? Gingrich’s contract called for a balanced budget and smaller government. The Bush administration has managed to expand the federal government like an overinflated balloon (the Medicare bill is just one example,) and has instituted measures that have resulted in the largest budget deficit ever.
And the Repugs accuse Kerry of being inconsistent?
