McClellan said Bolton faces “trumped-up” allegations, and said the Bush administration is confident Bolton will be confirmed.

“I think what you have are some Democratic members of the committee who continue to bring up unsubstantiated accusations,” he said. “They are unfounded.”

Both Democrats and Republicans had predicted that the GOP-controlled committee would vote along party lines to recommend Bolton for the job.

“The dynamic has changed,” Sen. Lincoln Chafee, R-R.I., said after the tense committee meeting. “A lot of reservations surfaced today. It’s a new day.”
