Our Saudi Pals

The Bush family’s best friends help fund the insurgency in Iraq.

Private Saudi citizens are giving millions of dollars to Sunni insurgents in Iraq and much of the money is used to buy weapons, including shoulder fired anti-aircraft missiles, according to key Iraqi officials and others familiar with the flow of cash.

[T]he U.S. Iraq Study Group report said Saudis are a source of funding for Sunni Arab insurgents. Several truck drivers interviewed by The Associated Press described carrying boxes of cash from Saudi Arabia into Iraq, money they said was headed for insurgents.

Two high-ranking Iraqi officials, speaking on condition of [anonymity] because of the issue’s sensitivity, told the AP most of the Saudi money comes from private donations, called zaqat, collected for Islamic causes and charities.

In one recent case, an Iraqi official said $25 million in Saudi money went to a top Iraqi Sunni cleric and was used to buy weapons, including Strela, a Russian shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missile. The missiles were purchased from someone in Romania, apparently through the black market, he said.

  1. If you support a terrorist yoiu are a terrorist – unless you give my family money?

  2. “But, but, but I don’t WANNA hold his hand. I’ll look like a fag!”
“George you WILL hold his hand or gas prices will go lower!”

  3. come on, no one is that stupid that they need a report to know that the Saudis, as good Sunnis are doing all they can to support the Sunnis in Iraq, i.e., the insurgents. And its not just money as they (the Saudis) recently summoned VP cheney to make sure he understands that the US is not to side with the Shiites in Iraq or else.
Iraq, awhile ago devolved past the ISG and all the other American blather about Iraq to a regional power struggle between Iran and Saudi Arabia, each with their proxies in Iraq. .

  4. “…best friend, you’re my best friend, through thick and thin, you’re my best friend… I love you guys”

  5. So…let’s connect the dots, shall we? The Saudis give money to the Sunni insurgents, who buy weapons from the Russians, and then turn around and use those weapons to kill…
U.S. soldiers, along with the Shi’a.
    Have I got that straight?
Where were those 9/11 terrorists from, again?
Fuck. And I use that word deliberately.

  6. Yeah.
and what ever happened to naming names? Modern investigative journalism comes off as “a story!, over there”. “Hey! anothe story, over there!”
They’re all so busy not getting scooped on the EXISTANCE of the story, that the media are failing to report the story itself.
It’s like a goldfish in a bowl. Neat! a diver! Oh! a castle! wow! a diver. my my my, a castle! gee, a diver!, cool! where’d that castle come from??

  7. As a friendly amendment to your list: Immediately after the 9/11 destructions, BushCo arranged for the Saudis to fly back to Saudi without as much as a friendly cup of coffee with the police.
Doesn’t it sound strange that the officials of the country that fostered the Saudis were protected from talking to the police?

  8. His own. That’s been obvious since he stole people’s homes to build the Ballpark in Arlington.
