Today on Tommy T’s Obsession with the Freeperati – The Bundy Bunch edition

Well, so much for my “no post this week” plans.

They do this to me EVERY TIME!!

OK – let’s get on with it. I was watching Freeperville Thursday morning, waiting for the shit that had already hit the fan everywhere else in the word to finally bob to the surface in Jim (Iearned my goverment hoverround) Rob’s sandbox.

When it did, it was almost with a sigh, and a deceptively complimentary headline:

A Defiant Rancher Savors the Audience That Rallied to His Side
NYT ^ | 4/23/14 | Adam Nagourney

Posted on Thursday, April 24, 2014 8:49:32 AM by smokingfrog

BUNKERVILLE, Nev. — Cliven Bundy stood by the Virgin River up the road from the armed checkpoint at the driveway of his ranch, signing autographs and posing for pictures. For 55 minutes, Mr. Bundy held forth to a clutch of supporters about his views on the troubled state of America — the overreaching federal government, the harassment of Western ranchers, the societal upheaval caused by abortion, even musing about whether slavery was so bad.

** snip **

“I want to tell you one more thing I know about the Negro,” he said. Mr. Bundy recalled driving past a public-housing project in North Las Vegas, “and in front of that government house the door was usually open and the older people and the kids — and there is always at least a half a dozen people sitting on the porch — they didn’t have nothing to do. They didn’t have nothing for their kids to do. They didn’t have nothing for their young girls to do.

“And because they were basically on government subsidy, so now what do they do?” he asked. “They abort their young children, they put their young men in jail, because they never learned how to pick cotton. And I’ve often wondered, are they better off as slaves, picking cotton and having a family life and doing things, or are they better off under government subsidy? They didn’t get no more freedom. They got less freedom.”

*****************

Bundy is now being slammed by the left for being a racist.

the slime’rat response – smear and attack the victim.

When a man sticks a “kick me” sign on his own behind…

If he had a better grasp of the fact that black family life has disintegrated in direct correlation to the “War on Poverty”, he has a defensible position. Throwing out that “picking cotton” allusion is just stupid.

Bundy is now being slammed by the left for being a racist.

Actually, if these statements are accurate he will be slammed by 90% of America for pretty blatant racist remarks. Paul, Heller, etc, pretty much everyone is going to walk about from someone who talks like this.

I mean, come on now. You can’t stand around talking about how the negro should have learned to pick cotton. I mean, even the most hard headed amongst us should understand that you can’t ally yourself politically with a person who makes such remarks.

Conservatives really, really, need to pick their battles better. How so many of us get suckered into supporting cranks, completely unelectable candidates, scam artists like Herman Cain who run for office to fund a book tour, etc, etc, I will never understand.

And then – it gets wierd.
I had prophesied to my Facebook buddies that morning :“They traditionally ignore news like this until they can’t any longer. Then they start screaming “False Flag!” and “Both Sides Do It ™! “
Guess what?

To: GIdget2004
So…what’s wrong with Mr. Bundy’s remarks?

Republicans are gutless wonders.

Wait! Bundy supposedly said this last Saturday and yet we are only hearing about this NOW? Also was this recorded or is it still something “overheard” by the NYT? Finally, the term “Negro” is rarely used nowadays. All this makes me suspicious of the veracity of the NYT (and no one else) report.

I’m still waiting to hear a recording of this. Supposedly the statements were made at a press conference last Saturday and these comments were only “overheard” by the NYT? No one else heard this? No recordings despite the fact that cell phone cameras are ubiquitous?

And , of course, this will be run on the media news shows 24/7 nonstop commentary.

If this was a supporter of Zer0 or a prominent democrat, they would not even mention it.

You’re probably right. An Obama supporter talking about the Cotton Picking Negroes would have NEVER made the news, other than everywhere on the fucking planet.
If anything, THIS shouldn’t really be news, because who here is surprised?
So – two schools of alleged thought here:“He didn’t say it!” , and If he DID say it, it’s the truth!”

To: Tammy8
he has likely not paid a lot of attention to changing terms.

Probably still calls a queer a queer, instead of “gay”.

No; he comes across as a free man. He is speaking his mind and does not really care to make it pleasing to others.

Blacks have suffered greatly in America — first from slavery, then from discrimination, and now from a paternalistic welfare state that alternately coddles and criminalizes them. It is shameful.

To: Cats Pajamas; Lazamataz

I don’t even get why folks are even arguing over this. Perhaps EVERYBODY should wait for VERIFICATION.Keep in mind these statements were supposedly made at a press conference LAST SATURDAY which were supposedly “overhead” by an NYT source. Thus far, NO RECORDINGS have been produced.

Ummm…there will be no statement of denial from the Bundy family.

I was browsing their Facebook page for statements on this and found this

Taken just a bit out of context for the whole video, but there nonetheless.

Out of context or not, this will be viral in hours.

Still, some of the Freeperati are concerned:

To: montag813
What exactly is “racist” about them? He used the word “Negro” — still used in the NAACP title — but otherwise was commenting on how the Great Society has harmed Black people. He never said anything about them being stupid or lazy. The context was that the government was to blame.

THEN HE SHOULD HAVE SAID THAT. “The Great Society program started by Johnson has hurt minorities in America.” Was that so hard? Why bring slavery or cotton-picking into the commentary??? Sheesh.

Bundy is a nutter. The government needed to be called for sending in snipers over grazing fees, but Bundy is no patriot, he’s a nutter and rallying to him as some sort of folk hero is and was stupid.

I think Mr. Clive Bundy has officially jumped the shark.

I’m reminded of George Zimmerman. The issues surrounding the shooting of Trayvon Martin were all correct. But Zimmerman personally was a tool; he was no shining example of conservatism. And neither is Bundy.

I wonder what those percentages are on this board. I can see this thread turning into a powder keg.

I dunno, I hope most people here are smart enough to know you can’t say idiotic things like this. These are sort of the ramblings of an old guy from an older generation. His heart may be in the right place, but these statements will alienate pretty much everyone. Every smart conservative will understand they can’t be associated with this sort of thing and run as far away as possible. You just can’t go around babbling about how the negro might be better off learning to pick cotton.

The real problem here is too many conservatives, through their support, allowed Bundy to become something of the face of the Western land battle. Now that public face is completely tainted by comments like this, which does serious damage to the broader issue for our side. Worse, assuming these are Bundy’s real statements, they will serve to vindicate slimeball Harry Reid on this issue in much of the court of public opinion.

Folks should have looked much harder at this guy before throwing their support behind him.

But still…

To: struggle
Is there any way we can get a consultant out to these folks before they start talking about ‘legitimate rape’ and ‘the Negro’?

LOL, yeah, seriously. Some conservative group needs to focus exclusively on getting “language consultants” out to every single Republican candidate, conservative icon, rising right of center star, etc. This consultant will simply remind them to never, ever talk about legitimate rape (or rape at all if it can be avoided), anything to do with the body magically preventing pregnancy, the word “negro” at all, especially the word “negro” and “picking cotton” in the same sentence, etc, etc.

“Great. The left wins, again, because of our own stupidity.” Yes, it’s an old story…

  2. iceblue2 says:

Wow. Can’t believe there were reasonable heads on that subject. Funny that they wanted proof, but FOX wasn’t mentioning it, so they were totally in the dark. Most people learn their lesson after getting burned once or twice. These people appear to defy that trend.

  3. Tommy T says:

iceblue2 – actually, the horrified reasonable types were in the minority.
The majority of the posts were of the “He’s 100% correct. More people need to say it!!” bent.
Right now, they’re screaming canards about getting flak when you’re over the target, and that two black people, one of them Cliven’s employee, don’t think he’s a racist.
No word on whether or not Cliven rubbed their heads appreciatively for backing him…

  4. maplestreet says:

WOW! One question about the quotes: Where does the word “Negro” appear in the name of the NAACP? Silly me, I thought the N was for National so one of the As must stand for “Negro”?
And definitely as Iceblue2 said. Along those lines, the locals here kept commenting that there was only one assault rifle at the Bundy party. (Totally ignoring all the video that was made there.) I’d like to think it it wholly “invicible ignorance” depending solely on the words of Faux News. But I also can’t ignore that one of the strategies the repubs and especially tea bag group have used is to continually come up with new lies and insist that the left do all the fact checking. Only problem is that in the few minutes it takes to fact check and find the statements debunked, they come up with new claims – leaving the left to stand there speechless. Kind of a variant at throwing all of it at the fan and seeing if anything sticks.
